POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Lead Graveyard Visitor Service Officer is a full-time, non-exempt employee of The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands who reports to the Security Manager and/or Director of Security and works in partnership with other Trust employees. The Lead Visitor Service Officer provides security for Northgate, Patrol, Center & Gardens, Historic Residence, and during retreats and special events and ensures the safety of visitors and staff. The LVSO provides direction and guidance to Visitor Service Officers on his/her assigned shift. The LVSO will provide shift information and report any concerns with VSOs to the Security Manager. The Graveyard shift is from 11:30pm to 8:00am.ย 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Work location: Onsite, rotating shifts, and weekend work.

Take guidance and direction from the Security Manager and/or Director of Security.

Provide guidance and give direction to on-duty graveyard VSO's during their shifts and assist with breaks and lunches.

Conduct pre-shift briefings with the incoming morning shift staff as needed and receive pass-down activity report from swing shift.

Provide input to the the Security Manager and/or Director of Security for staffing needs for Northgate, Patrol, Center & Gardens, Historic Residence, and during retreats and special eventsย 

Ability to execute the full duties of a VSO during a normal designated shift or assignment.

Provide verbal and/or written situation reports to the Security Manager and the Director of Security. Troubleshoot and relay instructions.ย 

Assist with training new hires in processes and procedures.

Handle critical issues and make judgment calls as needed.

Monitors all entry points of the Center & Gardens and Historic Estate to prevent unauthorized access into the facility.

Enforces the policies and procedures of the Center & Gardens and Historic Estate as directed by the Director of Security,

Monitors activity in assigned areas and immediately report any discrepancies observed regarding exhibits, art objects, lighting, facility, etc.

Exercises judgement in balancing competing demands, complex operational needs and priorities while remaining professional and providing superior, quality response.

Monitors radio traffic and maintains radio volume to a minimum, eliminating potential disturbance to guests or other staff.

Responds to medical and other emergencies and provides directions for staff in case of natural emergencies requiring evacuation and/or shelter.

Escorts staff, guides, volunteers and guests to or from parking areas upon request.

Provides the Director of Security with incident reports when they occur within the premises of the Center & Gardens and Historic Estate.

Champions a culture where employee and retreat participant safety is the highest operational priority.

Demonstrates accountability by maintaining assigned post coverage until properly relieved.

Maintains a neat, professional appearance in compliance with Trust policies.

  • Read and complete shift ย ย ย ย ย pass-downs.ย 
  • Start and maintain required daily paperwork, including the Daily Activity Report, Vendor Access Log, ย ย ย ย ย and Authorized Employee Access Logs.ย 
  • Control access at North Gate and verify authorization for after-hours entry.ย 
  • Monitor CCTV surveillance, intrusion/access-control activity, gates, and alarms.ย 
  • Conduct scheduled interior and exterior property patrols and complete Guard1 tours.ย 
  • Check assigned buildings, doors, gates, and restricted areas to ensure they are locked and secure.ย 
  • Report suspicious activity, safety hazards, property damage, maintenance concerns, alarm activity, and ย ย ย ย ย access-control issues promptly.ย 
  • Conduct assigned early-morning opening, unlocking, and disarming procedures.ย 
  • Ensure no unauthorized persons enter the property before approved access hours, except those on the ย ย ย ย ย 24-hour access list.ย 
  • Support retreat participants and overnight retreat operations as assigned.ย 
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies and coordinate with on-call leadership and emergency ย ย ย ย ย responders when needed.ย 
  • Complete the end-of-shift pass-down before going off duty.ย 

Ability to answer and direct phone inquiries to corresponding manager from guest staying onsite/retreat participants as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS:

ย 

Minimum of one year of service as a Visitor Service Officer, Security Guard, or similar security position.

High school or General Education (GED) diploma required.

Possession of guard card from the State of California.ย 

Possession of CPR and First Aid training and certification.ย 

Valid and unencumbered California driver's license.ย 

Must possess excellent communication and customer service skills.

Work independently and as part of a team.

Prior law enforcement or senior security officer experience preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing duties in this position, the employee will work outdoors and may be exposed to wet and/or hot conditions, moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, sharp objects, extreme heat and/or open flame. The noise environment in the work environment is usually moderate. The individual must be able to work in a fast-paced environment. The individual must be able to operate a golf cart, shuttle or motor vehicle.
