To thrive as a Graphic Designer Contractor, you need strong visual design skills, proficiency in typography and composition, and a solid portfolio demonstrating your creative abilities, usually supported by a degree or certification in graphic design. Mastery of design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with digital asset management systems are typically required. Exceptional communication, time management, and client collaboration skills set standout contractors apart. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality work on deadline, effectively meeting client needs, and maintaining a strong professional reputation.

AspectGraphic Designer ContractorGraphic Designer Employee

Work EnvironmentFreelance or remote projects, flexible scheduleIn-office or company remote work, structured hours
Employer & Industry UsageHired by clients or agencies on a project basisEmployed directly by a company or organization

Graphic Designer Contractors typically work independently on a project basis, offering flexibility and diverse clients, while Graphic Designer Employees work within a company's structure with consistent hours and benefits. Both roles require strong design skills and portfolios, but differ mainly in employment status and work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by Graphic Designer Contractors when working with multiple clients simultaneously?

Graphic Designer Contractors often juggle projects for different clients at the same time, which can present challenges such as managing conflicting deadlines, adapting to various brand guidelines, and communicating effectively across diverse teams. Prioritizing tasks, keeping clear records of feedback, and setting expectations upfront can help mitigate these issues. Developing strong organizational skills and being proactive in communication are key to maintaining quality and meeting client needs.

What are Graphic Designer Contractors?

Graphic Designer Contractors are creative professionals who work on a temporary or project-by-project basis to design visual content for clients. Unlike full-time employees, they are usually hired for specific tasks such as creating logos, marketing materials, websites, or advertising campaigns. They often work independently or through agencies, providing flexibility and specialized skills to businesses that need design work without committing to a permanent hire. Their responsibilities may include collaborating with clients, developing design concepts, and delivering final artwork to meet specific project requirements.

Job description

Do you believe no challenge is too complex to solve? You'll fit right in at U.S. Engineering. We deliver award-winning mechanical contracting, construction, service, and maintenance solutions with a focus on performance and innovation. Our team of skilled and collaborative professionals drives every project from preconstruction through final testing, always aligned with our clients' goals.
Graphic Designer
The Graphic Designer helps bring the U.S. Engineering brand to life through thoughtful, strategic design. This role creates clear, compelling visual content that supports business goals, strengthens brand consistency, and helps tell the story of who we are, what we build, and the people behind our work.
Working closely with the Marketing & Communications team and partners across the organization, this role develops creative assets that support recruiting, business development, internal communications, and brand awareness efforts. This is a hybrid position that combines remote work with regular in-office collaboration.
Principal Duties and Accountabilities:
  • Design and produce digital and print materials that support company goals and align with brand standards. Examples include presentations, proposals, social media graphics, email assets, event materials, brochures, signage, and internal communications materials.
  • Create visual assets for recruiting and employer branding initiatives, including hiring campaigns, career fair materials, recruiting presentations, job-related marketing materials, and content that helps attract future Team Members.
  • Partner with recruiting and HR teams to develop visual content that highlights U.S. Engineering's culture, career opportunities, benefits, and Team Member experiences.
  • Create visual assets for web and digital platforms, including website graphics, landing pages, digital campaigns, and other marketing initiatives.
  • Partner with Marketing & Communications Team Members to translate ideas, goals, and messaging into effective visual concepts.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders across recruiting, business development, operations, and leadership to support communication needs across the network of U.S. Engineering companies.
  • Manage multiple design projects from concept through final delivery while balancing priorities and deadlines.
  • Present design concepts and incorporate feedback in a collaborative, solutions-focused way.
  • Maintain brand consistency across all materials and help evolve visual standards as the brand grows.
  • Prepare files for print, digital publication, and production while ensuring quality and accuracy.
  • Coordinate with outside vendors, printers, photographers, freelancers, or other creative partners as needed.
  • Stay current on design tools, best practices, and evolving visual communication trends to help improve creative output.

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Fine Arts, or a related field preferred.

Experience:
  • 3+ years of professional graphic design experience with a strong portfolio that demonstrates creative range and strong execution.
  • Experience supporting recruiting marketing, employer branding, talent attraction campaigns, or workforce communications is a plus.
  • Experience working in an in-house marketing team, agency environment, or both preferred.
  • Experience designing for construction, architecture, engineering, manufacturing, or other technical industries is helpful but not required.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, including Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop.
  • Strong presentation design skills, including experience creating polished PowerPoint presentations.
  • Understanding of digital design best practices for web, email, and social media platforms.
  • Experience with motion graphics, photography, or animation is a plus.
  • Experience with Notion and Figma is helpful.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
  • Ability to receive feedback thoughtfully and apply it effectively.

Physical and/or travel demands:
  • This is a hybrid role that includes both remote work and in-office collaboration.
  • Work is primarily performed in an office environment and may require extended periods of sitting, standing, computer use, and occasional lifting of light materials.
  • Minimal travel may be required for company events, project site visits, or team meetings.

Benefits and Compensation:
  • The range for this position has been established at $58k to $83K annually and is U.S. Engineering's good faith and reasonable estimate at the time of the posting. The compensation offered to the finalist selected for this role will be based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training. Compensation for this role includes a base salary complemented by commission opportunities based on the Account Manager's individual sales performance and attainment of sales targets
  • Your total compensation will go beyond the number on your paycheck. Team members are eligible for a year-end bonus based on company and/or individual performance as well as paid time off. An industry-leading benefits package, including health, dental, and vision plans, matching retirement contributions, and matching 529 contributions all add to your bottom line.
