The Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences (FBNS) encompasses diverse disciplines in research extension and teaching. Our programs combine the disciplines of chemistry, engineering, microbiology, food, bioprocessing, nutrition, and sensory science. FBNS is home to 3 undergraduate majors and several graduate programs.
We provide a world-renowned education and engage with a variety of stakeholders to solve diverse industry-related problems that involve research, education and extension services. We build professional and industry relationships and active partnerships with national corporate and government centers, including USDA programs.
Home to more than 100 faculty and staff who work with and guide some 500 students, we are spread over a growing network of departmental facilities in North Carolina - Schaub Hall and the Howling Cow Dairy Education Center and Creamery in Raleigh, the Plants for Human Health Institute in Kannapolis, and the Center for Marine Sciences and Technology in Morehead City. Join our team as a detail-oriented Grant and Budget Specialist! We're looking for someone who knows the ins and outs of business and grant financial guidelines, federal compliance, and Cost Accounting Standards. Your expertise in managing grants and interpreting regulations will be key in supporting our state-appropriated budget and our significant grant portfolio in Food, Bioprocessing, and Nutrition Sciences.
In this role, you'll provide essential operational support to faculty, sponsors, and collaborators across department-funded projects. Working closely with CALS Business Operations and the college Contracts and Grants Office, you'll ensure smooth financial management and compliance with grant regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Interpret rules and regulations to manage grants efficiently and make recommendations to principal investigators.
  • Review and guide principal investigators on fiscal matters and personnel salaries.
  • Evaluate operational processes and implement changes to improve efficiencies.
  • Ensure compliance with Cost Accounting Standards and sponsor terms and conditions.
  • Provide training on internal operational processes and paperwork.
  • Assist with pre-award grant budget development and post-award analysis.
  • Review and approve grant expenses, including travel, Marketplace, PCards, and invoices.
  • Submit operational requests accurately and timely.
  • Facilitate communication between principal investigators and college business offices.
  • Foster healthy work relationships and provide excellent customer service.
