What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a graduation coach, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Graduation Coach, you need expertise in academic advising, student development, and educational planning, often supported by a degree in education or counseling. Familiarity with student information systems, tracking software, and data analysis tools is essential for monitoring progress and identifying at-risk students. Strong interpersonal skills, motivational abilities, and cultural competence help build trust and effectively support diverse student populations. These skills and qualities are crucial for guiding students toward graduation, improving retention rates, and fostering academic success.

What is a graduation coach?

A graduation coach works with students who are at risk of dropping out of high school or failing to graduate. Their job duties include developing strategies for the students to improve their grades, helping students with homework, and counseling parents on how best to support their children. The qualifications to become a graduation coach include a bachelor’s degree in education or a related field, though some employers may prefer candidates with a master’s degree.

What is the difference between Graduation Coach vs Academic Advisor?

While both roles support student achievement, a Graduation Coach primarily focuses on helping students complete their high school education and overcome barriers to graduation. An Academic Advisor typically assists college students with course selection, degree planning, and academic progress. The roles overlap in supporting student success but differ mainly in educational level and specific responsibilities.

How does a graduation coach typically support students at risk of not graduating, and what challenges might they face in this role?

Graduation Coaches work closely with students who are at risk of falling behind academically or not graduating on time. They identify barriers to success—such as attendance issues, academic struggles, or personal challenges—and develop individualized support plans. Coaches often collaborate with teachers, counselors, and families to coordinate resources and interventions. A common challenge is building trust with students and maintaining engagement, especially when addressing sensitive personal issues. Success in this role requires strong communication, problem-solving skills, and persistence.

Five Iron Golf is redefining the way people experience golf. By combining our passion for the game with cutting-edge technology like TrackMan and Callaway Tour Fitting, we help every golfer - from beginners to seasoned competitors, reach their full potential in a fun, inclusive, and tech-driven environment.

We're not just a golf facility; we're a community that celebrates learning, improvement, and connection. Our coaches are the heartbeat of that community, ambassadors who bring energy, expertise, and excitement to every lesson.

The Role

We're looking for a Golf Coach who is passionate about helping others improve their game while delivering an exceptional experience. This position reports directly to the General Manager of Performance and plays a key role in developing lasting relationships with our members and guests.

As a Five Iron Coach, you'll balance high-quality instruction with engagement time, working closely with our Social and Performance Teams to introduce golfers to lessons, fittings, and memberships. As you grow your client base and achieve performance goals, you'll transition into a full-time instruction role, supported by our Coach Development Program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver best-in-class golf instruction through individual and group lessons for players of all skill levels.
  • Utilize TrackMan and other Five Iron technologies to provide data-driven, personalized coaching and custom club fittings in partnership with Callaway Tour Fitting.
  • Actively engage guests during Golf Experience Engagement Time - promoting lessons, swing evaluations, fittings, and memberships.
  • Build and retain a loyal client base by creating welcoming, memorable, and performance-driven experiences.
  • Represent Five Iron Golf at corporate events, delivering fun, high-energy instructional sessions.
  • Maintain a consistent lesson schedule that meets productivity goals and performance expectations.
  • Leverage social media to promote your coaching services and the Five Iron brand.
  • Conduct junior clinics and support community outreach programs to grow the game.
  • Follow up with students to convert swing evaluations into ongoing lessons and achieve key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Serve as an on-floor Performance Expert, engaging with members to elevate their overall golf experience.
  • Participate in ongoing education and certification programs to continually sharpen your coaching skills.
Qualifications
  • Minimum 2 years of golf industry experience or graduation from a PGM program.
  • Proven one-on-one and group coaching experience preferred.
  • Strong understanding of swing mechanics, ball flight laws, and launch monitor data.
  • Proficient with video analysis and comfortable with golf technology tools.
  • Excellent communication skills - able to connect with golfers of all skill levels and explain complex concepts clearly.
  • Energetic and engaging personality with the ability to facilitate fun, group-based learning experiences.
  • Driven to learn, grow, and help students achieve measurable improvement.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • PGA or LPGA affiliation and/or PGM program graduation are strong pluses.
  • Physically able to stand, bend, and lift up to 30 lbs for extended periods.
Why Join Five Iron Golf

At Five Iron, we're serious about supporting our coaches, both on and off the course.

We offer:

  • A set schedule with two days off per week for true work-life balance.
  • Additional time off for tournament play, so you can keep competing if you choose.
  • Eligibility to become a Callaway Staff Member.
  • Access to the Five Iron Coach Development Program, including free certifications:
    • TrackMan
    • Golf Digest Coach
    • Callaway Fitting
  • PGA dues covered by Five Iron.
