Job description

OVERVIEW
JOB TITLE: Robotics Hardware Development Student Intern
LOCATION: St. Paul Campus
PAY RATE: $16.50/hour
HOURS: TBD
JOB SUMMARY We are seeking a motivated Mechanical Engineering student to support the development, validation, and implementation of an educational robotics platform. This role involves designing mechanical housings and support systems for multi-motor control integration, improving existing robotic platforms, and fabricating replicated systems for instructional use. The student will also assist in developing laboratory demonstrations and charging infrastructure. This position provides hands-on experience in electromechanical design, prototyping, and scalable manufacturing within an academic lab environment. Expected about 5-10 hours per week.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Design, validate, and iterate on mechanical enclosures and housings for a multi-motor robotic control system.
  • Evaluate and improve existing robotic platforms with a focus on performance, reliability, and instructional usability.
  • Develop and integrate charging and power management systems for classroom and laboratory use.
  • Design, fabricate, and oversee production of replicated robotic systems (approximately 30 units) for instructional deployment.
  • Create and implement instructional robotics demonstrations, including supporting CAD models, documentation, and setup procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current student, pursuing a BS or MS degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field graduating approximately June 2027.
  • Must be comfortable working independently with hardware, comfortable designing and creating prototypes, and able to document work clearly for a non-expert audience.
  • Mechanical Engineering student with coursework in Machine Design.
  • Hands-on experience with fabrication and CAD.

To be eligible for student employment, St. Thomas students must be degree seeking at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.
