What are Graduate Program Assistants?

Graduate Program Assistants are staff members who provide administrative and operational support to graduate programs within universities or colleges. Their responsibilities often include coordinating admissions processes, assisting students and faculty, managing records, organizing events, and ensuring compliance with institutional policies. They play a crucial role in maintaining smooth communication among students, faculty, and external departments, helping to create an efficient and supportive academic environment for graduate students.

How does a Graduate Program Assistant typically collaborate with faculty and students in their daily work?

Graduate Program Assistants play a key liaison role, supporting both faculty and graduate students by coordinating schedules, managing program communications, and assisting with the administration of academic processes like admissions or thesis submissions. Regular collaboration with academic advisors, department chairs, and administrative offices is essential to keep the program running smoothly and to address any issues promptly.

Free Clinical Ophthalmology Foundations Course

Are you a graduate in science, opticianry, or someone considering a career in healthcare?

The Clinical Foundations Course is an accelerated, introductory program that blends selfpaced learning with inclinic shadowing. It provides participants with a realistic, handson preview of ophthalmology workflows while giving Vision Group Canada an early opportunity to build relationships with highpotential candidates.

Target Audience

Students and graduates of science-related university programs, graduates of an Opticianry diploma program, or individuals interested in pursuing a career in healthcare.

Program Format

  • Self-paced remote learning: Short online modules completed asynchronously, allowing participants to learn on their own schedule.
  • Scheduled observation days in a clinic, for example, 2 to 3 days per week based on operational needs.
  • Accelerated timeline: A program designed to be completed over approximately two weeks during the summer.
  • Assessment: Short knowledge checks, quizzes, and module completion tracking. The goal is to encourage engagement and learning without creating unnecessary evaluation pressure.

Key Learning Themes

  • Core ophthalmic assessments: introductory concepts behind common tests (e.g., tonometry/IOP, visual fields, basic visual assessment)
  • Introduction to commonly used diagnostic tests and procedures in ophthalmology.
  • Essential pharmacology concepts: commonly prescribed ophthalmic medications and their role in routine clinical care.
  • Clinical exposure areas: refractive vs. clinical ophthalmology environments and, where feasible, a glimpse of surgical day workflow.

What You'll Receive

  • A certificate of completion recognizing your training.
  • Hands-on clinical exposure through structured observation experiences.
  • Direct connections with clinical leaders and teams, creating opportunities for future employment.
  • A simple way to explore various clinical career paths, including Ophthalmic Technician, Surgical Assistant, and Clinical Assistant roles.
