Job description

Isidore Newman School seeks a talented and dynamic Lower School 4th Grade Substitute Teacher to serve during a maternity leave period (August-November) during the 2026-2027 academic year. The role of the Lower School 4th Grade Substitute Teacher is multifaceted. The successful applicant will possess excellent speaking, writing, and interpersonal skills; demonstrate strong instructional and classroom management skills; be technologically savvy and computer literate; have an abiding interest in helping students to experience academic and social growth; be successful in working with teams; be willing to contribute to school activities outside of the assigned classroom; possess a strong understanding of the developmental level of the students they teach; and genuinely love to work with children and educators at the elementary level.


The most important qualifications include:


โ— A bachelor's degree or higher in elementary education or a related field
โ— Experience as an elementary grade educator
โ— Knowledge of varied pedagogy and trends in instruction and curriculum design at the elementary level
โ— Professional orientation toward collaboration and innovation
โ— A reflective practitioner, committed to a continuous process of self-improvement and lifelong learning
โ— Enthusiasm for teaching children
โ— Cultural competency demonstrating respect for diversity of identities and experiences and an orientation toward equity and inclusion
โ— A positive attitude, self-confidence, and effective oral and written communication skills
โ— Ability to engage, motivate, and develop student learning
โ— Must meet and maintain all federal, state, and local requirements to work in an educational childcare setting.


Significant responsibilities include:


โ— Plan and execute lessons that meet the differentiated needs of our students including whole group, small group, and individual instruction, and fulfill the skills and content of the grade level
โ— Demonstrate knowledge of content and pedagogy
โ— Facilitate the educational and social development of the students
โ— Create an environment of respect and rapport that is safe and conducive to learning
โ— Use instructional time effectively
โ— Collaborate positively with the grade level colleagues as well as other lower school faculty around teaching and learning and have a growth mindset
โ— Assess the students in a variety of ways, both formal and informal, and use assessment to guide instruction for student growth, development, and learning.
โ— Communicate openly and effectively with parents including but not limited to Parents Nights, Parent Teacher Conferences, Curriculum Conversations
โ— Participate in field trips and special traditions and activities of the grade level
โ— Maintain student records, display student work, and maintain a neat and organized environment for learning
โ— Model appropriate presence daily and ensure that students adhere to Lower School behavioral expectations
โ— Complete Lower School duties and responsibilities as assigned
