Position Summary
The 7th Grade ELA Long-Term Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality English Language Arts instruction and maintaining a positive, structured, and supportive classroom environment during the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The long-term substitute will follow the established curriculum, collaborate with the 7th grade ELA team, monitor student progress, maintain accurate records, and support the academic and social-emotional needs of all students.
The ideal candidate will be dependable, organized, flexible, student-centered, and committed to helping every Spartan RISE through Respect, Integrity, Service, and Excellence.
Essential Responsibilities
Instruction
  • Deliver standards-based 7th grade ELA instruction using the school's adopted curriculum, pacing guide, lesson plans, and instructional resources.
  • Prepare and deliver engaging lessons that address reading, writing, speaking, listening, language, and vocabulary skills.
  • Provide appropriate differentiation and scaffolding to meet the needs of diverse learners, including English Learners and students receiving special education services.
  • Utilize formative and summative assessment data to monitor student understanding and adjust instruction.
  • Provide opportunities for students to engage in meaningful discussion, collaboration, critical thinking, and written expression.
  • Implement required instructional practices and components established by West Hall Middle School and Hall County School District.
  • Provide appropriate intervention, enrichment, and support during WIN/intervention time as assigned.

Classroom Management & Student Support
  • Establish and maintain clear classroom expectations aligned with WHMS RISE expectations.
  • Create a safe, respectful, inclusive, and productive learning environment.
  • Consistently implement schoolwide behavior expectations and procedures.
  • Address student behavior appropriately and follow school procedures for documenting and referring significant concerns.
  • Build positive relationships with students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Support students in developing responsibility, independence, and ownership of their learning.

Collaboration & Communication
  • Collaborate with the 7th grade ELA team, special education teachers, interventionists, counselors, administrators, and other support staff.
  • Participate in grade-level and/or content-area planning and PLC meetings as required.
  • Maintain communication with families regarding student progress, academic concerns, and classroom expectations as appropriate.
  • Communicate regularly with the supervising administrator and department/grade-level team regarding student needs and classroom concerns.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information and comply with all school, district, state, and federal requirements.

Assessment & Records
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and submit attendance according to school procedures.
  • Grade and record assignments, assessments, and other student work in a timely manner.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records and documentation.
  • Monitor student progress and communicate concerns to the appropriate staff members.
  • Complete required reports, documentation, and administrative tasks associated with the long-term assignment.

Professional Responsibilities
  • Follow all West Hall Middle School and Hall County School District policies, procedures, and expectations.
  • Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Attend required staff meetings, professional learning, and other assigned school activities.
  • Protect student confidentiality and maintain professional relationships with students, families, and staff.
  • Support schoolwide activities, events, and initiatives as assigned.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, flexibility, initiative, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students and contribute to a culture in which Team Sparta works together to help every student RISE.

Required Qualifications
  • Valid Georgia teaching certificate in an appropriate field or qualifications required by Hall County School District for long-term substitute teachers.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with middle school students.
  • Strong communication, organization, classroom management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow curriculum, pacing, assessment, and schoolwide instructional expectations.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students while maintaining high expectations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching English Language Arts at the middle school level.
  • Experience with standards-based instruction and data-informed practices.
  • Experience working with diverse learners, English Learners, and/or students with disabilities.
  • Familiarity with Google Workspace, Infinite Campus, and other instructional technology platforms.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a PLC or grade-level team.

Physical and Work Requirements
The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. The position requires regular interaction with students and staff, classroom instruction, supervision of students, and movement throughout the school environment.
