What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Govcon position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Govcon (Government Contractor) role, you need a strong grasp of federal acquisition regulations, proposal development, and contract management, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications such as Certified Federal Contracts Manager (CFCM). Familiarity with contract management software, procurement systems, and compliance tools is highly valued in this field. Exceptional attention to detail, project management skills, and the ability to communicate complex requirements clearly will set you apart. These skills are critical for ensuring successful contract execution, compliance with government regulations, and fostering strong client relationships.

How do I get into government contracts?

To get into government contracts, individuals or companies should register in the System for Award Management (SAM), obtain necessary certifications such as small business or industry-specific credentials, and identify opportunities through federal procurement websites like SAM.gov. Building relationships with government agencies and understanding procurement processes are also essential steps.

What is a GovCon company?

A GovCon company is a business that provides products or services to government agencies, often through government contracts. Employees in GovCon companies may work on projects related to defense, technology, or infrastructure and often require security clearances and knowledge of government procurement processes.

What's the easiest government contract to get?

For Govcon professionals, small or simplified contracts such as task orders under existing blanket purchase agreements or small business set-asides are generally easier to secure. These contracts often have less complex requirements and lower entry barriers, making them accessible for new or small firms with basic certifications like SBA 8(a) or HUBZone status.

What jobs pay 4000 a week without a degree?

In government contracting, high-paying roles such as project managers, cybersecurity specialists, or technical consultants can earn around $4,000 weekly without a formal degree, often requiring specialized skills, certifications, or extensive experience. These positions typically involve contract work, security clearances, or technical expertise and may require on-the-job training or industry certifications instead of a traditional degree.

What is a Govcon job?

A Govcon job refers to a position within government contracting, where a company provides products or services to federal, state, or local government agencies. These jobs can range across industries such as IT, cybersecurity, logistics, and consulting. Govcon roles may involve working on competitive contract bids, ensuring compliance with government regulations, and managing project deliverables. Many positions require security clearances or specialized knowledge of procurement regulations like the FAR (Federal Acquisition Regulation).

What are some common challenges faced in a Govcon (Government Contractor) role, and how can I prepare for them?

One common challenge in a Govcon role is navigating the complex and frequently changing government regulations and contract requirements, which demands thorough knowledge and proactive learning. You may also encounter tight deadlines during proposal submission periods and the need to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Collaboration with both internal teams and external government stakeholders is vital, requiring clear communication and problem-solving skills. To prepare, staying up-to-date on regulatory changes, building strong organizational habits, and seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues can be extremely beneficial for new and seasoned professionals alike.

Job description

You chart the course; we help you lift off! At YHB, we aren't limited by small-firm constraints or stuck in the big-firm mentality. Our culture is based on relationships — between our teams and our clients. We aim to hire great people who want to take ownership of their careers while we help to provide the tools for success. Tax Managers are responsible for the overall coordination and management of engagements, ensuring work is completed accurately, timely, and at a high level of quality. In addition to delivering excellent client service, Tax Managers play a key role in developing talent through mentoring, coaching, and performance management.

This role is focused on State and Local Tax (SALT), with exposure to Government Contracting (GovCon). The ideal candidate brings strong multistate tax experience. Given the firm’s multistate client base, SALT expertise is critical to success in this role.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Identify risks, audit exposure, and planning opportunities (credits, strategies, etc.)
  • Apply strong research and analytical skills to resolve complex tax issues.
  • Translate complex SALT concepts into clear, actionable guidance.
  • Develop and possess a thorough understanding of tax accounting fundamentals; sufficient knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and Regulations and other technical guidance, including industry and practice-specialty standards.
  • Develop and demonstrate strong research, analytical, and communication (written and verbal) skills to ensure that clients remain in compliance with tax regulations, to identify potential issues or opportunities, and provide solutions for complex client issues and problems.
  • Share in the responsibility for keeping all YHB employees informed on changes in standards, tax laws, regulations, and other current tax matters.
  • Develop and maintain specific areas of expertise and focus on these areas.
  • Continually develop strong workpaper and tax return review skills.
  • Identify problems and be responsible for proposing solutions by applying strong analytical techniques and performing or directing appropriate research of potential solutions.
  • Provide solutions for complex client issues by applying analytical techniques and research.

Advisory, Client and Business Impact

  • Act as a trusted advisor by anticipating client needs and delivering proactive solutions.
  • Understand how SALT impacts broader financial and operational decisions.
  • Balance technical accuracy with practical business implications.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through proactive communication and reliability.
  • Ensure timely responses and high-quality client service.
  • Navigate complex or sensitive discussions (e.g., audit exposure, risk) with confidence.
  • Tailor communication of tax matters to various audiences.
  • Identify opportunities to expand services and support client growth.

People Leadership & Development

  • Serve as a positive and productive example of Firm Leadership and fulfill all requirements of the Circle Manager role.
  • Mentor, coach, and support the career development of Supervisors, Senior Associates, and Associates.
  • Provide regular and constructive feedback to team members, ensuring they understand performance expectations.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and create development plans to help team members progress in their careers.
  • Empower team members through thoughtful delegation and provide the resources and guidance necessary for success.
  • Address performance challenges directly and implement improvement plans when needed.
  • Encourage collaboration, inclusivity, and continuous learning within teams.

Productivity & Business Development

  • Comply with YHB’s time reporting requirements and take ownership of meeting billable hour expectations while ensuring quality work and appropriate billing realization.
  • Recognize the importance of relationship-building by cultivating professional networks through events, civic/industry involvement, and leadership roles.
  • Identify and pursue business development opportunities through strategic outreach and analysis of client needs.
  • Support firm growth by contributing ideas, coordinating events/webinars, and assisting with proposals and presentations to highlight YHB’s expertise.
  • Assist in the delivery of proposals and presentations tailored to current and prospective clients.

Continuous Learning & Professional Development

  • Contribute to business development efforts, including proposals and client initiatives.
  • Stay engaged in continuous learning and professional development.
  • Support the growth of SALT and GovCon service offerings within the firm.
