What Does a Geophysicist Do?
A geophysicist is a scientist who studies the movement of the earth. This includes seismic activity (earthquakes) and the earth’s magnetic fields, as well as gravity and electrical fields. Some geophysicists work for natural resource companies, sourcing, and mining these resources. Others work in research and academic pursuits. Some geophysicists study the environmental impact of construction projects as well. There are many fields and industries where geophysics is a relevant science.

What is the difference between Geophysicist vs Geologist?
| Aspect | Geophysicist | Geologist |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's or master's in geophysics, geology, or related field; often requires specialized training in geophysical methods | Bachelor's or master's in geology or earth sciences; focus on mineralogy, petrology, and structural geology |
| Work Environment | Field surveys, data analysis, modeling; often in exploration, environmental, or research settings | Fieldwork, laboratory analysis, mapping; in mineral, oil, gas, or environmental industries |
| Industry Usage | Used in oil & gas exploration, environmental consulting, and research | Used in mineral exploration, environmental assessment, and academic research |
While both geophysicists and geologists study Earth's processes, geophysicists focus on physical methods to explore subsurface features, whereas geologists analyze Earth's materials and history. Their roles often overlap in exploration projects, but their approaches and tools differ.

- Lead field surveys using techniques such as seismic reflection, refraction, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), electromagnetic surveys, and passive seismic methods.
- Operate and maintain advanced geophysical equipment for data acquisition in complex environments.
Algorithm Development
- Develop and implement machine learning algorithms to improve detection and classification of subsurface features and materials.
- Apply advanced computational techniques to analyze seismic, acoustic, and electromagnetic sensor data.
Advanced Modeling and Analysis
- Perform in-depth analysis of geophysical data using physics-based models, inversion theory, and 3D visualization tools.
- Model subsurface processes to identify vulnerabilities in WMD facilities and underground infrastructure.
Technical Leadership
- Design test plans and execute validation processes for geophysical models and algorithms.
- Provide technical oversight for the integration of geophysical data into broader mission objectives.
Collaboration
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including software developers, engineers, and data scientists, to develop integrated solutions.
- Support interagency and international collaboration on geophysical research and assessments.
