What is a genetic laboratory director?

Genetic Laboratory Directors are professionals who oversee the operations of genetic testing laboratories. They are responsible for ensuring the accuracy, quality, and compliance of laboratory tests related to genetics, such as DNA, RNA, or chromosomal analysis. Their duties often include supervising laboratory staff, maintaining protocols, adhering to regulatory standards, and validating new testing methods. These directors typically hold advanced degrees in genetics or related fields and possess extensive experience in laboratory management and genetic testing.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a genetic laboratory director?

To thrive as a Genetic Laboratory Director, you need advanced expertise in molecular genetics, laboratory management, and quality control, typically supported by a Ph.D. or M.D. and board certification (such as ABMGG or equivalent). Familiarity with next-generation sequencing platforms, laboratory information management systems (LIMS), and compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., CLIA, CAP) is essential. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help foster teamwork and ensure accurate reporting. These competencies are vital to maintaining high standards of scientific accuracy, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency in a genetics laboratory.

What challenges does a genetic laboratory director face in managing regulatory compliance?

Genetic Laboratory Directors often face the challenge of keeping up with evolving regulations and standards, such as CLIA, CAP, and state-specific requirements. Ensuring all laboratory processes, documentation, and personnel certifications remain compliant requires continual training and process audits. Additionally, Directors must oversee quality assurance measures and promptly address any non-conformities, balancing regulatory demands with efficient laboratory operations. Effective communication with regulatory bodies and staying informed about policy updates are essential to maintaining accreditation and delivering reliable genetic testing results.

Job Description & Requirements
Co-Director, Genetics Laboratory
StartDate: ASAP Pay Rate: $315000.00 - $350000.00

Indiana University School of Medicine is seeking a physician or senior laboratory leader to serve as Co Director of the IU Genetic Testing Laboratories within the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics. This is an exciting opportunity to join a well-established and rapidly growing academic lab and help guide its next phase of growth across clinical diagnostics and genomics.

The laboratory is based within IU School of Medicine and supports patients throughout IU Health and across the state.
