Job description

Overview

Shriners Children’s Chicago offers specialized care for a wide range of pediatric orthopedic, bone and joint conditions, including rare diseases and syndromes. Other specialties include spine and scoliosis care, plastic surgery, cleft lip and palate care, comprehensive rehabilitation and spinal cord injuries.

We have a part time opportunity (20 hours per week) for a Genetic Counselor to join our team!

The pay range for this position is $38.13 hourly to $57.20 hourly. Compensation is determined based on years of experience and department equity.


Responsibilities

  • Clinical Care
    • Provide genetic counseling for pediatric patients and families across a broad range of general genetics indications.
    • Obtain and interpret detailed medical, developmental, and three‑generation family histories.
    • Educate families about genetic conditions, inheritance patterns, recurrence risks, and implications for relatives.
    • Prepare patients and families for genetic testing, including informed consent and discussion of benefits, limitations, and possible outcomes.
    • Communicate genetic test results clearly and compassionately and assist with follow‑up recommendations.
  • Genetic Testing Coordination
    • Recommend appropriate testing strategies (single‑gene, panels, exome/genome, CNV analysis).
    • Coordinate test ordering, insurance authorization, sample logistics, and result tracking.
    • Review and summarize laboratory reports; assist with interpretation and phenotype–genotype correlation.
  • Documentation & Workflow Support
    • Prepare accurate and timely clinic notes, result letters, and patient education materials.
    • Support clinic operations, including triage, scheduling coordination, and communication with families and referring providers.
    • Maintain documentation in the electronic medical record.
    • Work closely with the clinical geneticist and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams where genetics participate.

Qualifications

Education and Certification Required

  • Master's degree - two-year, full-time master's program in genetic counseling accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC)
  • Successful completion of certification exam from the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) to become a certified genetic counselor
