What jobs pay $500,000 a year in the US?

High-level roles for general contractors or construction executives can reach annual earnings of $500,000 or more, especially with extensive experience, large-scale projects, or ownership stakes. Such positions often require advanced certifications, strong management skills, and a significant project portfolio. Other high-paying jobs in the US include specialized medical professionals, corporate executives, and certain technology roles, but for general contractors, income typically depends on project size and business success.

What are general contractors?

General contractors are professionals or companies responsible for overseeing and managing construction projects from start to finish. They coordinate and supervise subcontractors, source materials, handle permits, and ensure that the project is completed on time and within budget. General contractors serve as the main point of contact between clients and all parties involved in the construction process, ensuring quality and safety standards are met.

What jobs make $10,000 a month without a degree?

A general contractor can earn $10,000 or more per month by managing construction projects, coordinating trades, and overseeing budgets, often with experience and industry knowledge rather than formal degrees. Success in this role depends on skills, reputation, and the ability to secure high-value contracts, with many contractors earning substantial income through project management and business development.

How much do most general contractors make?

Most general contractors earn a median annual salary of around $97,000, with salaries typically ranging from $60,000 to $150,000 depending on experience, location, and project size. Experienced contractors with specialized skills or working on large projects tend to earn higher wages. Certification and strong management skills can also influence earning potential.

What are some common challenges a General Contractor might face when managing multiple subcontractors on a large construction project?

General Contractors often encounter challenges in coordinating schedules, ensuring consistent communication, and maintaining quality standards across multiple subcontractors. Delays from one subcontractor can impact the entire project timeline, so effective project management and contingency planning are essential. Additionally, General Contractors must regularly monitor progress, address conflicts or misunderstandings promptly, and ensure that all work complies with safety and regulatory requirements. Strong leadership and organizational skills are key to overcoming these challenges and delivering successful projects.

What jobs pay 2000 a day?

In the construction industry, experienced general contractors or specialized project managers can earn around $2,000 per day, especially for large-scale or complex projects. High-paying roles often require extensive experience, certifications, and the ability to manage multiple teams and budgets efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a General Contractor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a General Contractor, you need a solid understanding of construction methods, project management, budgeting, and building codes, often supported by a relevant degree or significant hands-on experience. Familiarity with construction management software, estimating tools, and relevant safety certifications like OSHA are typically required. Strong leadership, negotiation, and communication skills help manage subcontractors, clients, and complex timelines effectively. These abilities are crucial for delivering projects safely, on time, and within budget while maintaining quality standards.

Commercial Construction, Restoration & Capital Projects

Ottawa, ON

Full-Time

Reports To: President / Operations Leadership

About Haven Building Group Inc.

Haven Building Group Inc. is a growing commercial and institutional construction company based in Ottawa.

Our work is heavily focused within the condominium and property management sector, where we complete both large-scale tendered construction projects and responsive service-based work.

We work alongside engineering firms, consultants, condominium corporations, commercial property managers, and restoration professionals on projects including:

  • Building envelope restoration
  • Balcony and parking garage rehabilitation
  • Structural concrete repairs
  • Commercial renovations and tenant fit-ups
  • Capital repair programs for condominium corporations
  • Waterproofing and leak investigation projects
  • Ongoing service, repair, and maintenance contracts

As Haven continues to expand its commercial construction division, we are looking for a highly driven and experienced Senior Project Manager / Senior Estimator who can lead projects from pre-construction through execution while helping scale our operations and estimating capabilities.

This is a high-impact leadership role for someone who thrives in fast-paced environments, takes ownership, and can confidently manage both technical estimating and operational project delivery.

The Opportunity

This role combines senior-level estimating, project management, operational leadership, and client coordination.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Lead complex tenders and bid submissions
  • Oversee awarded projects from start to finish
  • Manage subcontractors, schedules, budgets, and project execution
  • Support operational systems and process improvements
  • Help mentor and guide field staff, PMs, coordinators, and estimators
  • Play a key role in Haven’s long-term commercial growth strategy

This is not a “sit back and delegate” role.

We are looking for someone proactive, organized, accountable, and capable of driving results in both the office and the field.

What You’ll Be Responsible ForSenior Estimating & Pre-Construction

  • Lead full-cycle estimating for commercial restoration and construction projects
  • Review drawings, specifications, consultant reports, and tender packages
  • Prepare conceptual, budgetary, and detailed estimates
  • Develop scopes, subcontractor invitations, and bid packages
  • Analyze subcontractor pricing and level bids accurately
  • Build detailed bid sheets and pricing strategies
  • Identify project risks, exclusions, contingencies, and value engineering opportunities
  • Coordinate tender closings and submission requirements
  • Support business development and strategic pursuit planning

Project Management & Operations

  • Manage awarded projects from mobilization to closeout
  • Coordinate schedules, subcontractors, procurement, and manpower planning
  • Maintain project budgets, forecasting, change orders, and cost controls
  • Conduct site visits, project meetings, and progress reviews
  • Support Site Superintendents and field staff with execution planning
  • Maintain strong communication with consultants, engineers, boards, and clients
  • Resolve project issues quickly and professionally
  • Ensure projects remain on schedule, on budget, and aligned with company standards

Leadership & Team Development

  • Help build systems and improve operational efficiency
  • Mentor junior PMs, coordinators, and estimators
  • Assist with hiring and subcontractor relationship development
  • Support growth of Haven’s commercial construction division
  • Promote accountability, communication, and strong company culture
  • Lead by example through professionalism and ownership

Who This Role Is Perfect For

  • A highly experienced PM/Estimator who enjoys both operations and pre-construction
  • Someone who thrives in organized chaos and fast-paced environments
  • A leader who solves problems rather than waits for direction
  • Someone comfortable balancing office responsibilities with site involvement
  • A construction professional who wants to help grow a rapidly expanding company
  • Someone entrepreneurial who wants real influence within a growing organization

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in commercial construction, restoration, or capital projects
  • Strong estimating and project management experience within a General Contractor environment
  • Experience with condominium restoration, envelope work, concrete repair, or occupied buildings is considered a strong asset
  • Strong understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and tendering processes
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong subcontractor coordination and negotiation skills
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational abilities
  • Experience managing budgets, schedules, and project financials
  • Strong knowledge of construction sequencing and field operations
  • Proficiency in Excel, Microsoft Office, and construction management software
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation is strongly preferred for this role. Candidates with engineering backgrounds and extensive construction leadership experience will be given priority consideration.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Performance-based bonuses
  • Vehicle allowance / company vehicle (role dependent)
  • Health & dental benefits
  • Paid vacation and holidays
  • Company phone and laptop
  • Opportunities for advancement and leadership growth
  • Long-term career opportunity within a rapidly growing company
  • Strong team-first culture with direct access to leadership
  • Diverse and steady pipeline of commercial and restoration projects across Ottawa
