ABOUT YU MING CHARTER SCHOOL
Yu Ming Charter School is a non-profit, tuition-free network of public schools located in Oakland and San Leandro and open to all residents of California. RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide a high quality, personalized education program in music
    • Build a classroom culture in which students love music
    • Engage students with a repertoire that is relevant to their lives and interests and incorporates instrumental music
    • Design and execute high-quality community music performance opportunities for all students
    • Prepare lesson plans and course timelines; select materials for courses
    • Communicate regularly with students and their families about classroom activities and student progress
    • Manage student behavior to ensure every student is fully engaged
    • Identify unique student needs and collaborate with team members to effectively address those needs
  • Lead an after-school music club and/or band, providing students with opportunities to develop musical skills and perform.
  • Develop a week-long expeditionary hands-on learning experiences for middle school students
  • Coordinate school-wide music performances three times a year
  • Actively participate in professional development activities including engaging in training with school leaders and coaches to benefit from targeted feedback on instruction, accelerating learning and growth with unparalleled support
  • Collaborate with colleagues to improve instructional practices throughout the school; share best practices
  • Maintain a high-level of professionalism including meeting deadlines and commitments to self and the community
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Music or multiple-subject teaching credential or plan to enroll in a teaching intern program
  • Successful completion of CBEST and/or CSET exam; CLAD or BCLAD
  • Experience working with students as a teacher, teacher intern, or teaching assistant preferred
  • Proficiency in playing and teaching brass and/or woodwind instruments
  • Professional training in a rigorous music or music education program
  • Experience working with children and implementing music instruction
  • Passionate about music and learning
  • Superb interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of students, colleagues and families
  • Flexibility and adaptability to change; ability to work in a dynamic, creative and start-up learning environment
  • Driven adult learner dedicated to his or her own professional growth, including learning new and innovative teaching practices

TIME COMMITMENT
180-day school year, 8 student-free professional development days for collaboration with colleagues. Common building hours for full-time employees are Mondays 8:00am-3:30pm and Tuesdays-Fridays 8:00-4:00pm. Part-time employee's work days and hours will vary.

  • Placement on the Yu Ming Charter School Salary Table based on years of experience and highest degree earned, with up to 12 years of experience recognized.
  • An additional Annual $5000 stipend for National Board Certification.
