What is functional neurosurgery?

Functional neurosurgery is a specialized branch of neurosurgery that focuses on treating disorders of the nervous system by altering or modulating its function. This field often involves procedures like deep brain stimulation, lesioning, or implanting devices to manage conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, chronic pain, and movement disorders. The goal is to improve quality of life for patients by restoring or modifying neurological function, often in cases where medications have not provided sufficient relief. Functional neurosurgeons work closely with neurologists, neurophysiologists, and other specialists to tailor treatments to each patient's needs.
