What is a full time texture artist?

Full time texture artists are professionals who create and apply textures to 3D models in the gaming, film, animation, or visual effects industries. Their job is to make digital objects look realistic or stylized by designing the surface details, such as color, bumpiness, and reflectivity. They use specialized software like Substance Painter, Photoshop, and Maya to craft these textures and ensure they fit seamlessly with the overall visual style of the project. Texture artists work closely with modelers, lighting artists, and art directors as part of a larger creative team. Being full time means they are employed on a permanent or long-term basis rather than working as freelancers or on short-term contracts.

How does a full time texture artist typically collaborate with other members of a game or film production team?

As a Full Time Texture Artist, you’ll work closely with 3D modelers, concept artists, and technical directors to bring visual assets to life. Collaboration often involves interpreting concept art, discussing feedback from art leads, and ensuring textures meet both artistic and technical requirements. You’ll also regularly attend team meetings to align on project goals and resolve any integration issues with shaders or game engines. Effective communication and receptiveness to feedback are essential to successfully integrate your work into the larger production pipeline.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time texture artist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Texture Artist, you need strong artistic ability, a deep understanding of color theory, and proficiency in creating detailed textures for 3D models, often supported by a degree in art, design, or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard software such as Adobe Photoshop, Substance Painter, and 3D modeling tools like Maya or Blender is typically required. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective collaboration are crucial soft skills for delivering high-quality assets and integrating feedback. These abilities ensure that visual assets meet project standards, enhance realism, and contribute to a cohesive visual experience in games, films, or digital media.

What is the difference between Full Time Texture Artist vs Part Time Texture Artist?

AspectFull Time Texture ArtistPart Time Texture Artist
Work HoursTypically 40 hours/week, full scheduleFewer hours, flexible schedule
Employment StatusPermanent, benefits includedTemporary or freelance, limited benefits
Work EnvironmentStudio or office settingRemote or freelance projects
Required SkillsProficiency in texturing software, consistent qualitySimilar skills, but may work on varied projects

Full Time Texture Artists are employed on a permanent basis with regular hours and benefits, working primarily in studio environments. Part Time Texture Artists work fewer hours, often remotely, and may handle freelance or short-term projects. Both roles require strong texturing skills, but full-time positions typically demand more consistency and availability.

Working under the direction of a senior VDB Developer, this individual creates and refines 3D assets, terrain features, airport infrastructure, environmental elements, and supporting visual content that contribute to realistic, operationally accurate airport environments.

This position focuses on implementing the senior VDB Developer's vision by constructing detailed airport environments, creating high-quality 3D assets, and ensuring visual fidelity while meeting real-time simulation performance requirements.

Key Responsibilities

3D Asset Development:

  • Create and modify 3D models for airport terminals, control towers, hangars, buildings, signage, lighting, fencing, vehicles, and surrounding infrastructure.
  • Produce optimized assets suitable for real-time simulation while maintaining high visual quality.
  • Create and apply textures, materials, and lighting using modern PBR workflows.
  • Develop reusable asset libraries for common airport structures and environmental objects.

Airport Environment Construction:

  • Assemble airport environments from source imagery, engineering drawings, GIS data, and reference photography.
  • Place and align airport objects according to the design guidance provided by senior VDB Developers.
  • Build terrain features, roadways, parking areas, vegetation, and surrounding landmarks.
  • Implement runway markings, taxiway signage, lighting systems, and airport infrastructure.
  • Support development of airport environments for all designated FAA Air Traffic Control Towers (ATCTs).

Visual Refinement & Optimization:

  • Improve visual quality through texture refinement, lighting adjustments, and asset optimization.
  • Support development of environmental effects including day/night operations, seasonal conditions, and weather visualization.
  • Assist with animation of environmental objects and airport assets where required.
  • Optimize models to maintain required simulation performance.

Quality Assurance Support:

  • Verify models for proper scale, placement, texture mapping, and rendering performance.
  • Correct visual defects identified during QA reviews.
  • Participate in iterative design reviews with senior developers and subject matter experts.
  • Ensure all assets comply with established modeling, naming, and performance standards.

Repository & Configuration Support:

  • Maintain models, textures, and supporting files within the program configuration management system.
  • Follow version control procedures for all visual assets.
  • Package assets for integration into the Visual Database.
  • Maintain organized project documentation and asset libraries.

Collaboration:

  • Work closely with senior VDB Developers, Scenario Developers, Systems Engineers, and software developers.
  • Participate in Agile sprint planning, backlog refinement, and design reviews.
  • Support rapid implementation of airport modifications and visual updates.
