POLICE OFFICER (FULL-TIME/SPONSORSHIP)
City of South Daytona - South Daytona Police Department

* THE SOUTH DAYTONA POLICE DEPARTMENT MAY OFFER SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR NON-CERTIFIED APPLICANTS WHO ARE OTHERWISE HIGHLY QUALIFIED.
POSITION OBJECTIVES
Performs a wide variety of policy and law enforcement duties including the protection of property, crime detection,
and public safety. This class is characterized by the use of independent judgment in the application of police
principles and knowledge of laws in responding to emergency or difficult situations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
โ€ข Responds to priority calls regarding public disturbances, criminal, civil or emergency situations; directs activities on site until relieved by superior officer; provides emergency medical assistance; controls traffic; ensures general public safety
โ€ข Detects and prevents criminal activities by surveillance of assigned business and residential areas; notes possible criminal occurrences and takes steps to prevent criminal actions; promotes crime prevention by initiating contact with businesses and residents including explaining applicable laws, soliciting cooperation in crime reporting, and otherwise creating a good rapport with area citizens.
โ€ข Secures crime scenes; investigates accidents in assigned area and assists other officers; protects evidence, takes testimony from witnesses and assists Detectives in specialized investigations
โ€ข Enforces traffic laws and vehicle codes and promotes traffic safety; notes illegal or unsafe driving practices and advises or makes arrests as appropriate; directs traffic, reports unsafe road conditions, and otherwise promotes vehicular and pedestrian safety.
โ€ข Prepares a variety of daily and other reports related to crimes, accidents, and other duties; maintains logs, completes forms, and prepares dispositions and reports as requested.
โ€ข Provides a variety of related police services; transports and fingerprints prisoners, provides assistance to motorists, resolves domestic disturbances, gives talks before civic groups, and testifies in court.
โ€ข Follow-up on reported criminal activity to seek proactive means to reduce future occurrences
โ€ข Performs monthly checks on sex offenders and predators within the city.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
โ€ข High School Diploma or general education degree (GED).
โ€ข Minimum of one (1) year of experience in general law enforcement work or equivalent public contact work.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
โ€ข Valid Florida Driver's License required.
โ€ข Must receive FCIC certification within ninety (90) days from date of hire.
โ€ข Ability to obtain a State of Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission recognized Basic Law Enforcement (BLE) Academy Certification.
+ Proof of Academy Application/Registration MAY be requested.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
โ€ข Knowledge of police principles and practices. Knowledge of applicable laws and precedents. Knowledge of city and state ordinances.
โ€ข Knowledge of emergency medical and first aid practices.
โ€ข Knowledge of the geography of the City.
โ€ข Ability to observe and detect potential problems.
โ€ข Ability to act effectively in crisis situations.
โ€ข Ability to investigate situations and to prepare written reports.
โ€ข Skill in dealing tactfully and effectively with citizens in a wide variety of stressful situations.
โ€ข Ability to communicate ideas and information in an effective, clear and concise manner both orally and in writing.
โ€ข Ability to maintain proficiency in the use of firearms.
โ€ข Ability to physically detain law breakers.
โ€ข Skill in operating motor vehicles in hazardous situations.
โ€ข Working knowledge of personal computer and ability to use computer software applications.

ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL DESIGNATION
