What is a full time rotational nanny?

A Full Time Rotational Nanny is a professional childcare provider who works in scheduled shifts, often alternating with another nanny to provide continuous, around-the-clock care for children. This arrangement typically involves living in the family's home for a set period, such as one or two weeks, followed by an equal period off. Rotational nannies are responsible for all aspects of childcare, including daily routines, activities, meals, and sometimes travel with the family. The role is ideal for families who require flexible, reliable, and consistent care, especially in households with demanding schedules or frequent travel.

How does a full time rotational nanny typically coordinate schedules and responsibilities with other nannies or family members?

As a full-time rotational nanny, you will usually work in tandem with another nanny or a team, following a set rotation schedule (such as one week on, one week off). Clear communication and collaboration are essential to ensure consistency in childcare routines, discipline, and family preferences. You'll often use shared digital logs or daily reports to relay important updates about the children, activities, or household matters. Regular check-ins with the other nanny and the parents help maintain a smooth transition between shifts and uphold a high standard of care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time rotational nanny, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Rotational Nanny, you need expertise in child care, early childhood development, and a proven track record of working with families, often supported by certifications like CPR/First Aid and a valid driver's license. Familiarity with communication apps for scheduling, child monitoring systems, and household management tools is often required. Flexibility, strong communication, and the ability to build trust with both children and parents are vital soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities ensure the nanny can provide high-quality, reliable care and support while adapting to changing schedules and family needs.

Job description

Household Manager and Family Assistant
Location: Houston, TX 77005
Employment Type: Full-Time | 30-35 hours per week
Compensation: $28-32 per hour
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM, with the opportunity for additional optional evening or weekend hours (such as date nights or additional babysitting) for candidates interested in a fuller schedule.
  • Summer Schedule: During the summer, the children's mother and the boys are typically away from Houston for approximately two months. While the Employee will remain on guaranteed pay during this time, household responsibilities are substantially reduced. Depending on the family's needs, this period may include light household management, vendor coordination, and preparing the home for the family's return, while also allowing for a much more flexible schedule than during the school year.

Start Date: ASAP
Requirements
  • Able to maintain a smoke-free environment.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States.
  • Reliable personal transportation, valid driver's license and clean driving record; a dedicated family vehicle is provided for work use.
  • Fragrance-free in the home.
  • Candidates are required to be up to date on recommended vaccinations in line with American Academy of Pediatrics and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines (including flu and general immunizations), subject to applicable legal accommodations.
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred.

About Our Family
We are a welcoming and active family of four based in Houston's West University area. Both parents are working professionals-one full-time outside the home and one part-time from a home office-and we are raising two energetic, curious boys.
Our older son has neurodivergent needs; he participates in several weekly therapies and flourishes with calm, empathetic, and consistent support. Our younger son is in preschool and will transition to full days later in the school year.
As our boys have grown, our household needs have evolved, and we are seeking someone who can blend thoughtful, engaging childcare with strong household management. With a twice-weekly housekeeper, weekly landscaper, and a roster of trusted vendors in place, this role focuses on coordination, follow-through, and ensuring the home runs smoothly every day.
We value privacy and discretion; we take confidentiality seriously and expect the same from anyone joining our team. We are warm, collaborative, and treat our household staff as valued members of our extended family. If you are rooted in professionalism, respect, and a shared commitment to helping our home thrive, we'd love to meet you.
Who You Are / What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is organized and proactive by nature, and able to read the room. You know that laundry and school pickups come before reorganizing the pantry on the hierarchy list, and you prioritize core daily tasks before adding your own personal touch to things. You are punctual and you respect the natural rhythms of a household where someone is working from home with the door closed.
With the kids, you bring patience, calm energy, and genuine care. You understand that one of our boys has neurodivergent needs and you approach that with empathy, flexibility, and a measured demeanor. You are safety-conscious without being anxious: helmets, car seats, and pool supervision are non-negotiables to you. You naturally encourage independence in children rather than doing everything for them and, ideally, have some familiarity with Montessori principles.
You communicate concisely - a quick text over a long story - and you don't need constant check-ins or hand-holding to stay on task. You model healthy habits around children without being rigid, and you bring professionalism and discretion to everything you do.
Key Responsibilities
Family Support & Child Assistance
  • Afternoon pickup for younger son 3-4 days per week (school is approximately 5 minutes from home); pickup for older son up to 3 days per week (approximately 15 minutes from home)
  • Transport children to and from activities including swim, after school activities, and the neighborhood parks
  • Supervise and engage children during afternoon downtime - structured activities such as bike rides, crafts, or park outings preferred over unoccupied time
  • Provide backup childcare and light supervision as needed
  • Prepare and stock snacks; assist with school lunch prep
  • Support morning routine prep as needed (backpacks, clothing, snacks)
Laundry & Linen Care
  • Manage family laundry as a daily priority: washing, drying, folding, and putting away
  • Linen rotation and maintenance
  • Keep laundry areas tidy and well-stocked
Household Organization & Maintenance
  • Daily tidying and reset of common areas between housekeeper visits
  • Prepare home for housekeeper days
  • Packing and unpacking for family travel
  • Coordinate donation drop-offs
  • Indoor plant care
  • Replace batteries, light bulbs, and smoke detector batteries as needed
  • Refresh and reset garage, mudroom, and entry areas as needed
  • Holiday support: Christmas card stuffing and addressing, gift wrapping coordination
Meal Support
  • Handle majority of family's grocery shopping needs based on a provided list of recipes and ingredients
  • Meal prep assistance: washing and chopping produce, marinating proteins, and prepping some meal components ahead of time so the family can assemble easily
  • School lunch prep and batch preparation as needed
  • Kitchen clean-up and maintenance
Inventory & Errands
  • Restock pantry, fridge, and household supplies
  • Maintain and manage running household supply lists
  • Manage household orders and subscriptions (Amazon, Costco, Target)

  • Gift shopping, hostess gifts, and seasonal purchases
  • Mail and package handling; break down boxes after confirmed returns
Pet Care
  • Two quality walks per week for the family dog
  • Defrost and prepare food for daily meals
  • Administer monthly flea, tick, and heartworm prevention medication
  • Occasional vet drop-off as needed
  • Maintain pet supplies; pick up treats from local pet bakery
Vehicle Upkeep
  • Fuel, clean, and organize the dedicated family vehicle
  • Schedule oil changes and routine maintenance as needed
  • Assist with tracking registration and tags
Vendor & Property Oversight
  • Schedule and manage grill cleaning
  • Schedule and manage routine appliance maintenance / cleaning
