As of Jul 8, 2026, the average hourly pay for full time robotics internships in the United States is $28.24, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $22.12 and $32.93 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are full time robotics internships?

Full time robotics internships are temporary positions, usually lasting several months, where students or recent graduates work in the robotics field under the supervision of experienced professionals. These internships typically require interns to work standard full-time hours (usually 35-40 hours per week) and involve tasks such as programming robots, designing and testing robotic systems, and assisting with research or development projects. Full time robotics internships provide hands-on experience, industry knowledge, and networking opportunities that can help launch a career in robotics.

What types of projects or tasks do full-time robotics interns typically work on during their internship?

Full-time robotics interns often participate in hands-on projects such as developing and testing algorithms for robot navigation, assisting in hardware assembly and troubleshooting, and helping with data collection and analysis for machine learning applications. Interns usually collaborate closely with engineers and researchers, attend regular team meetings, and may contribute to code reviews or technical documentation. This exposure provides valuable experience with real-world robotics challenges and an understanding of how multidisciplinary teams operate within the industry.

What is the difference between Full Time Robotics Internships vs Robotics Engineer?

AspectFull Time Robotics InternshipsRobotics Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduates with relevant courseworkBachelor's or higher in robotics, engineering, or related fields
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, often in corporate or research settingsFull-time professional roles in industry or research labs
Employer & Industry UsageInternship programs offered by tech companies, startups, universitiesEstablished companies, R&D departments, industry leaders
Search & Comparison IntentLooking for entry-level, short-term experience opportunitiesSeeking full-time career positions in robotics

Full Time Robotics Internships are short-term, entry-level positions designed for students or recent graduates to gain industry experience. Robotics Engineers are full-time professionals responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining robotic systems. Internships serve as a stepping stone into the robotics industry, while Robotics Engineers hold permanent roles with greater responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Full Time Robotics Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Full Time Robotics Intern, you generally need a strong background in robotics, mechanical or electrical engineering, programming (such as C++ or Python), and current enrollment in or recent graduation from a related STEM degree. Familiarity with robotics simulation tools (like ROS, Gazebo, or MATLAB) and experience with hardware prototyping or microcontroller platforms (such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi) are typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication help interns excel in collaborative and fast-paced environments. These skills are crucial to contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt to complex challenges, and integrate with multidisciplinary teams in the robotics field.

Job description

We are seeking a robotics Software Dev Engineer to join Compass. In this role, you will own the integration of the Compass software into various platforms, including mobile robots, mobile manipulators, and legged robots. You will interface with motion planning, sensing and perception, and safety firmware and create abstractions that enable the Compass software to be easily deployed across millions of robots.
Key job responsibilities
• Design, implement, and maintain the software integration layer that enables Compass safety modules to interface with diverse robot platforms (mobile robots, manipulators, dynamically stable robots)
• Build robust abstractions and APIs that decouple safety logic from platform-specific hardware, enabling rapid deployment across new robot form factors
• Collaborate with motion planning, perception, and controls teams to ensure seamless data flow and real-time performance between safety systems and autonomy stacks
• Develop and maintain interfaces to safety-rated firmware and hardware, ensuring compliance with functional safety requirements
• Architect scalable, production-grade software that can operate reliably across millions of deployed robots
• Write high-quality, well-tested, and maintainable code in C++ and/or Python for real-time robotics applications
• Define integration testing strategies and build simulation-based validation pipelines to verify safety behavior across platforms
• Contribute to system design reviews, technical documentation, and cross-team alignment on interface contracts
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks in real-time safety-critical software paths
• Mentor junior engineers and raise the bar on software engineering practices within the team
