How much do full time radiation effects engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 18, 2026, the average yearly pay for full time radiation effects engineer in the United States is $118,363.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $90,500.00 and $156,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What does a full time radiation effects engineer do?

A Full Time Radiation Effects Engineer is responsible for studying and mitigating the impact of radiation on electronic components and systems, particularly those used in aerospace, defense, and space applications. Their work involves testing materials and devices to assess how radiation exposure affects performance and reliability, and designing solutions to protect or harden hardware against these effects. They also analyze data, develop test plans, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure systems can operate safely in radiation-prone environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a full time radiation effects engineer, and why are they important?

A Full Time Radiation Effects Engineer typically requires a strong background in electrical engineering, physics, or a related field, with expertise in radiation effects on electronic devices. Familiarity with simulation tools, laboratory testing equipment, and standards like MIL-STD-883 is essential, along with relevant certifications or experience in aerospace or defense industries. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and presenting technical findings. These skills ensure accurate assessment and mitigation of radiation risks, supporting the reliability and safety of mission-critical electronic systems.

What are some typical collaboration points between a radiation effects engineer and other engineering teams during a project?

Radiation Effects Engineers regularly collaborate with hardware, systems, and reliability engineering teams to assess and mitigate the impact of radiation on electronic components and systems. This often involves joint design reviews, coordinating radiation testing campaigns, and sharing findings to inform component selection and system-level hardening strategies. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as the Radiation Effects Engineer's insights help guide design decisions that ensure mission-critical reliability, especially for aerospace or defense applications.

What is the difference between Full Time Radiation Effects Engineer vs Radiation Test Engineer?

AspectFull Time Radiation Effects EngineerRadiation Test Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, specialized in radiation effectsEngineering or technical degree, focus on testing procedures
Work EnvironmentDesign, analysis, and modeling of radiation effects in electronicsTesting and evaluating electronic components under radiation conditions
Industry UsageSemiconductors, aerospace, defense, nuclear industriesElectronics manufacturing, aerospace, research labs

Full Time Radiation Effects Engineers focus on understanding and mitigating radiation impacts through design and analysis, while Radiation Test Engineers primarily conduct testing to evaluate component resilience. Both roles require knowledge of radiation environments but differ in their core responsibilities and work processes.
