About the Position: The Clinical Nurse Abstractor is responsible for systematically collecting, organizing, and analyzing comprehensive case information to support the Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) Panel's review process. This role involves examining death certificates, obtaining and securely managing records from multiple sources, and compiling critical documents such as death investigation reports, SUIDI forms, autopsy and toxicology reports, and police records to accurately document the circumstances and sequence of events leading to a child's death. The Clinical Nurse Abstractor prepares complete case files for panel members, initiates completion of the FIMR Report Form, and ensures all relevant data is accurately entered into the NCFRP reporting system and serves as a FIMR Subcommittee Coordinator. By providing thorough, reliable, and organized case information, the Clinical Nurse Abstractor enables the panel to conduct informed reviews, identify risk factors, and make evidence-based recommendations to prevent future infant deaths.
What you'll need to be Successful: Formal training or experience in medical record abstraction, clinical documentation review, or surveillance systems highly desirable. Knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes, and clinical standards related to maternal, infant, and child health. Experience reviewing, interpreting, and abstracting information from complex medical records, including hospital, EMS, autopsy, and coroner records. Experience working with confidential, sensitive, or legally protected data. Experience using electronic health records (Epic preferred) and data abstraction or surveillance systems. Ability to identify patterns, contributing factors, and inconsistencies in clinical records. Skill in documenting findings clearly, objectively, and consistently for review teams and reporting. Works effectively with multidisciplinary teams including clinicians, epidemiologists, legal staff, and program leadership. Emotional resilience and ability to work with child, maternal, and infant death data in a respectful and objective manner. Self-directed and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Preferred Qualifications: Typically requires state licensure as a Registered Nurse and 2+ years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
