GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Provides excellent customer service in a team-based environment in the North Regional Library Circulation Unit
Work is performed under the supervision of the Library Circulation Manager; does related work as required.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule including afternoon, night and weekend shifts.
Although this position is based at the North Regional Library, the person in this position may be asked to work at other Durham County Library locations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Shares in the responsibility for coverage of the Circulation Desk
- Supports library circulation functions such as checking items in and out, daily intake and delivery of library materials, pulling holds, shelving, stocking displays, library notices, fee collection, and customer accounts
- Assists with emptying the book return, checking items in and shelving holds, and maintaining bookshelves
- Registers new borrowers and resolves issues related to library accounts
- Answers questions and provides routine information in person, over the phone, and virtually.
- Assists with monitoring and answering LibAnswers/LibChat
- Assists with money handling to include, but not limited to, daily revenue reports, cash management reports, reconciling cash register, weekly bank deposits, audits, and coin-op machine
- Works at the adult and children's information desks as part of cross-scheduling training
- Assists Library Circulation Manager with special projects as needed
- Actively serves on committees and assists with special projects that support the library's strategic plan
- Serves on system teams and committees, as assigned
- Performs related tasks as required or requested
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- General knowledge of library principles, methods, materials, and practices
- General knowledge of theory and objectives of a public library system
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library employees and patrons
- Ability to use personal computers, word processing, and spreadsheet software
- Ability to organize and maintain materials and reference files
- Sufficient keyboard experience to use automated systems effectively
- Possess excellent internal and external customer service skills
- Basic computer skills
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with study in library science or related field and six months experience in general library services.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to speak Spanish a plus
