Johnson Library branch has an opportunity for a Youth Services Librarian. In this role, you will coordinate Youth Services programs/projects for youth ages 0-18 and their families, teach and coach staff, volunteers, and citizens, provide customer service, and coordinate collections. While the primary focus will be leadership in Youth Services, the librarian will also work with youth and adults in intergenerational programming. In the team environment, employees will participate in setting unit, library, and system goals, contribute to decision-making, and evaluate progress. About the Position

Our Librarians are known for customer service, programming, outreach, collection development/maintenance, administration, and staff development. In this role, you will...

  • Develop and implement standards of service that ensure the prompt and efficient resolution of each inquiry, delivered with the utmost respect and courtesy.

  • Promote understanding and use of the library, its technology, and resources by presenting individual and group training programs.

  • Assist customers by locating answers to questions, including Interlibrary Loan services and referrals to agencies outside the library.

  • Keep abreast of developments, new trends, and innovations in libraries.

  • Aid at service desks and to other sections as needed.

  • Represent Sarasota County and the library/library interests to library users and within the community.

  • Prepare reviews, press releases, bibliographies, and other promotional displays.

  • Analyze and identify service population needs, developing and directing plans to meet those needs.

  • Network with other agencies to provide and obtain materials and services.

  • Participate in setting unit, library, and system goals, contributing to decision-making and the evaluation of progress.

About the Schedule

This position is Full-Time, at 40 hours per week.

Employees must be available to work based on business needs.

Betty J. Johnson North Library Hours of Operation:

  • Monday and Wednesday: 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

  • Tuesday and Thursday: 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

  • Friday and Saturday: 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

  • This location is currently closed on Sunday; this could change in the future, depending upon business needs.

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Library Science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) or the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Science Professionals (CILIP).

  • - OR - Bachelor's degree and enrolled in an MLS/MLIS program with the ability to obtain an MLS/MLIS within twelve (12) months of hire.

  • Valid Florida Driver's License by date of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • One year of experience in a library environment.

  • Experience working with diverse populations.

  • Knowledge of makerspace technology and applications.

  • Ability to train/coach patrons in the use of technology.

Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment for a period of 5 years.

Physical Demands: Employees in this role must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Employees can use handling devices (dolly, cart, etc.) or work with another team member to lift and/or move excessive poundage of 50-plus pounds.
