Job description

BASIC PURPOSE OF THE JOB
Provides foreign language interpretation and translation for patients, families and Children's Hospital healthcare providers. Is proficient in spoken and written English and language(s) to be used for interpretation and translation. Understands the cultural framework of the respective LEP population(s) and facilitates accurate communication. All actions are in accordance with the Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Healthcare.

  • Director-Care Coordination

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Supervisory Responsibilities: No
Minimum Education: Bachelors
Degree: Social Sciences, Languages, or English preferred
License/Certification Required: If hired after January 2012: Certified National Medical Interpreter obtained within two years of employment for full-time or part-time employment. If PRN, certification must be obtained within three years of employment.
Minimum Work Experience: Medical experience/ background considered in lieu of degree
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Bilingual Medical Terminology, outstanding communication skills, attention to detail, capable of multitasking, flexible, grammatically accurate bilingual writing skills.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides accurate & timely interpretation to patients/families & health care team in developmentally & age appropriate manner while adhering to ethical & legal standards.
  • Manages flow of communication between patient/family and staff/provider.
  • Maintains boundaries and refrains from counseling, advising or projecting personal biases or beliefs.
  • Demonstrates self-awareness of level of competence & personal sentiments. Declines or withdraws from Interpretation assignment if conflict of interest.
  • Completes documentation. Complies with hospital & departmental Quality Improvement standards & statistical requirements.
  • Translates written materials accurately & within requested time frame.
  • Assesses ability of patient/family to receive information or education. Shares assessment with health care team.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of Cultural Framework & advises health care team of impact of information on patient/family.
  • Advocates for patient/family with the intention of supporting positive health outcomes &/or preventing possible harm. Maintains confidentiality.
  • Demonstrates impartial and non-judgmental attitude regarding content to be interpreted.
  • Acts as an ambassador for Children's Hospital while at work & at Children's Hospital sponsored events.
  • Provides Cultural Diversity training & in-service education for Children's Hospital staff.
  • Willingly accepts any other assignment that may be requested.
  • Demonstrates accountability and responsible use of Children's Hospital and Department time and resources.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Note: Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this position.
  • Medium lifting, pushing and pulling is required for 20-50 lbs occasionally, 10-20 pounds frequently and 10 lbs constantly to move objects. Sudden emergency situations have the potential for exposure for lifting or moving of up to 100 lbs. Frequent bending, walking, sitting, squatting, reaching, and standing are required. Keyboard/computer use and/or repetitive motions may be required.
