Schedule: 48 on duty / 96 off duty
Reports to: Shift Captain

Summary:
Duties include but are not limited to: the daily inspection, maintenance, and cleanliness of vehicles, equipment, and station. Performs all forms of emergency services, including but not limited to fire, basic and advanced life support, hazardous material, rescue, and public education events as directed. Has daily contact with the public requiring the utmost tact and courtesy. Making instantaneous decisions on all types of emergencies requires mature judgment and knowledge. Required to attend mandatory training both on and off duty as directed to maintain skills and learn new information. Also, any tasks and duties as directed by the Shift Captain.
Description:
  • Provides advanced emergency medical care to sick or injured persons, including basic cardiac life support, basic trauma life support, pediatric care, obstetrical care, advanced airway management, or drug treatments.
  • Responds to and participates in firefighting operations.
  • Inspects buildings for pre-fire plans, fire hazards, and compliance with fire prevention ordinances.
  • Maintains cleanliness of vehicles, inside and out. Cleanliness of the station inside and out.
  • Performs daily inspections of all supplies, equipment, vehicles, and station. Ensuring readiness and completing repairs or replacement of items when necessary.
  • Responsible for accurately and completing all required Jekyll Island Authority and Jekyll Island Fire Department reports and documentation within the required time frames.
  • The position is considered a Critical Workforce for the Jekyll Island Authority and is required to work during Critical Workforce and is subject to being required to work during a State of Emergency.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • A high school diploma or GED that is accepted by the Georgia Firefighter Standards amp; Training Council is required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Georgia residents must have a valid driver's license. This license must be in one of the following classes within 60 days of employment: Georgia Class A, B, E, or F.
    Candidates residing in another state must have the equivalent license classification.
  • Must maintain a current Georgia Emergency Medical Technician- Advanced or Intermediate Certification.
  • Must maintain a Georgia Firefighter Certification. Individuals eligible for recertification or reciprocity due to a lapse must complete the certification within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Additional knowledge and skills for the position:
  • Knowledge of standard emergency management principles, techniques, terminology, equipment, and materials, including extrication and search and rescue.
  • Knowledge of response areas.
  • Knowledge of the National Incident Command System.
  • Knowledge of hazardous materials.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of specialized emergency equipment, including but not limited to Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), extrication, and other common types of equipment.
  • Skill in performing emergency medical techniques, including CPR and first aid.
  • Skill in performing mathematical calculations.
  • Skill in communication, both oral and written.
  • Skill in the operation of personal computers (PC) and Microsoft Outlook.
  • Skill in operating an Android Operating System (OS) Tablet and associated software used in job duties.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to pass and maintain the physical requirements of the Georgia Certified Firefighters Physical Agility Test.

Working Conditions:
  • Indoor duty is performed in a controlled temperature environment. However, they may be exposed to extreme temperatures or humid conditions during an emergency.
  • They may be exposed to noisy environments during emergencies.
  • They may be exposed to the vibration of the body during emergencies.
  • They may be exposed to hazardous materials, chemicals, fire, infectious diseases, and burns.
  • During emergencies, they may be exposed to exhaust or chemical fumes, smoke odors, dust, mists, and gases.
  • Performs work mainly on even carpeted and tiled floor surfaces. May work on asphalt, concrete, or natural ground during an emergency. They may be required to work on inclines or ramps, catwalks or scaffolding, stairs, and ladders. The working surface is mainly dry but may be wet or greasy during emergencies.
  • Performs work with direction. May work with one or two other people. May work with a large group of people.
  • Work is conducted during any time of day or night as needed for emergencies.
  • May be required to work additional hours when minimum staffing levels cannot be achieved through voluntary means.
  • The employee is subject to call back and therefore requires a reasonably available telephone.
