Firefighter/Paramedic (Lateral Entry)!
This opportunity is for experienced professionals seeking to continue their career with Springfield's progressive and community-focused fire department
Examples of DutiesThe Firefighter/Paramedic is responsible for the performance of specialized duties in the saving of life and the fighting and prevention of fires. Work involves a variety of duties including firefighting, paramedic work, and property and equipment maintenance on an assigned shift.
QualificationsEligibility (Lateral Entry)Applicants may be considered for appointment through the lateral-entry process,
without participating in a competitive civil service examination, if they meet
all of the following criteria:
- Are currently employed as a Firefighter/Paramedic by a Fire/EMS agency, or have been employed and compensated in that role within the past ninety (90) days
- Hold current State of Ohio Firefighter II and Paramedic certifications
- Possess at least one (1) year of paid experience as a Firefighter II/Paramedic, whether with their current agency or through cumulative prior service
AGE: At least 18 years of age at time of appointment
EDUCATION: High School Graduate or equivalent
PHYSICAL: Eyesight: 20/20 corrected Weight: In proportion to height
MUST possess the overall ability to sufficiently perform all of the essential functions of the position.
RESIDENCY: Must reside within the radius of 350 N Fountain Ave to the furthest point in any adjacent county (53.6 miles).
LICENSE: Must hold a valid unrestricted Ohio Motor Vehicle Operator's License and meet and maintain insurance requirements under the City's plan.
RULES AND REGULATIONS: Must adhere to the Springfield Fire Rescue departmental rules and regulations, which includes acceptable grooming standards.
MUST successfully complete and pass a physical capabilities agility test (PCAT), as well as a polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, OP&F physical, and a background check.

Single and family coverage is available. The City health care plan is a high deductible healthcare plan. You will become eligible for medical insurance on the first of the month following your start date, or on your start date if you start on the first of the month.
HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNTEach year the City deposits 75% of your health insurance deductible amount into an HSA account in your name if you participate in the annual wellness screening. If you choose not to participate in the wellness screening, the City will deposit 50%.
DENTALThe City pays half of the full premium up to a maximum of $30 per month for dental.
LIFE INSURANCEThe City pays 100% of the premium for term life insurance to all active permanent, full-time employees. Employees receive $25,000 of coverage.
RETIREMENT PENSIONThe City contributes 24% monthly toward retirement benefits offered through the Ohio Police and Fire Pension System (OPF). The employee's share is 12.25% of their gross salary.
RETIREMENT SAVINGSYou have the option to enroll in a voluntary retirement savings plan, such as a 457(b) deferred compensation plan or Roth IRA.
VACATIONNew full-time employees accumulate 96.20 hours upon completion of one year of service. Following years of service will accrue on a tiered scale, topping out at 240 hours per year.
SICK LEAVEAll employees accrue .0575 hours of sick leave per each hour in paid status.
HOLIDAYSThe City allots 216 holiday hours per year.
FITNESS CENTERYou have 24/7 access to a fitness center located in City Hall. The center includes a variety of commercial equipment including cardio and resistance machines and free weights.
EXPERIENCE PAYExperience Pay will start after 5 years of service, which grants additional compensation to employees who have completed five or more years of total service with the City.
TUITION REIMBURSEMENTAll permanent full-time employees are eligible to participate in the City's Tuition Reimbursement plan, provided they have at least one year of continuous service with the City and it is subject to policy terms and conditions.
