Position Overview

Full-Time, Year-Round Bus Operator

 Starting Pay: $31.00/hr

$600 CDL BP2 Sign-On Bonus

The Town of Vail, Colorado, is looking for enthusiastic and dependable full-time, year-round bus operators to join our Transportation Department! Operators will operate a public transportation bus requiring a commercial driver's license.  They are responsible for pick-ups, transports, and drop-offs of passengers on a prescribed route, on time and in accordance with local, state, and federal standards.  They must provide guests with schedule/route information and the most effective alternatives to reach their desired destinations.  They will also assist disabled guests on and off the bus, practice safe defensive driving techniques, and report all accidents, damage, or incidents of vandalism. Operators may be assigned to the bus wash as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Operate a public transit bus requiring a commercial driver's license (CDL)

  • Provide safe, timely, and friendly transportation on designated routes

  • Assist passengers, including those with disabilities, with boarding and exiting

  • Share schedule and route information, offering alternative options when needed

  • Use safe, defensive driving techniques to ensure passenger and pedestrian safety

  • Report any accidents, damage, or vandalism as required

  • Support bus maintenance by assisting with bus washing as needed

  • Conduct yourself as a professional representative of the Town of Vail, exercising sound judgment and providing excellent service to all internal and external customers

  • Serve the community by adhering to Town of Vail core values

  • Stay up to date with and strictly comply with Federal and Colorado traffic laws and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations

  • Maintain safe driving practices, considering speed, weather conditions, and surrounding traffic

  • Perform pre-trip vehicle inspections, checking for mechanical issues and testing all operating/safety devices before each shift

  • Complete accident and incident reports accurately and in a timely manner

  • Record passenger counts and submit bus maintenance defect reports as necessary

  • Ensure buses are stocked with maps and schedules for passengers

  • Comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by providing accessibility for disabled passengers, operating lifts properly, and securing passengers safely

  • Follow environmentally friendly practices and all Town of Vail safety and health policies

  • Assist in training new bus operators on routes and procedures

  • Perform all other job-related duties as assigned

The position is exposed to engine noise and fumes. Most of the shift is spent sitting while driving, with occasional stooping, standing, kneeling, and lifting.

*Must currently hold a CDL BP2 to be eligible for the bonus*
