Job description

The Medical Billing Assistant supports the billing team by assisting with the preparation, submission, and follow-up of laboratory claims. This role helps ensure accurate billing, timely payments, and compliance with healthcare regulations while providing administrative support to the laboratory billing department. 

Key Responsibilities 

  • Assist with preparing and submitting laboratory claims to insurance carriers 

  • Verify patient demographic and insurance information 

  • Enter and update billing data in billing systems and EHR/LIS platforms 

  • Review claims for accuracy and completeness prior to submission 

  • Assist with payment posting and tracking of accounts receivable 

  • Help follow up on denied or unpaid claims under supervision 

  • Respond to basic billing inquiries from patients and insurance companies 

  • Maintain organized and confidential billing records 

  • Support audits and compliance requirements as needed 

Qualifications 

Required: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent 

  • Basic knowledge of medical billing or healthcare administration 

  • Strong data entry and organizational skills 

  • Attention to detail and accuracy 

  • Ability to handle confidential information in compliance with HIPAA 

Preferred: 

  • Previous experience in medical billing, preferably in a laboratory or healthcare setting 

  • Familiarity with CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes 

  • Experience with billing software, EHR, or laboratory information systems (LIS) 

  • Certification or coursework in medical billing or coding 

Skills & Competencies 

  • Strong attention to detail 

  • Basic understanding of insurance processes 

  • Good written and verbal communication skills 

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment 

  • Team-oriented with a willingness to learn
