Gallery Construction Supervisor (Regular Full-Time)

Exhibition Design and Production

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Gallery Construction, the Gallery Construction Supervisor supports the programming efforts of the institution with a primary focus on the construction of architecture and specialized furniture supporting the display of LACMAโ€™s collection and loan exhibitions. The Gallery Construction Supervisor will coordinate operations at museum construction sites as well as in galleries located on LACMAโ€™s main campus and elsewhere in Los Angeles County.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and oversees gallery construction operations in support of permanent collection installations, temporary exhibitions, and special projects at LACMA's main campus and other museum locations throughout Los Angeles County.

  • Executes project priorities, schedules and work plans established by the Senior Manager of Gallery Construction to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

  • Supervises Gallery Construction staff, including monitoring attendance, assigning daily work activities, and ensuring appropriate staffing levels to meet project requirements.

  • Provides leadership and technical guidance during the fabrication, installation, modification, and deinstallation of exhibition display furniture, casework, platforms, walls, and other museum exhibition elements.

  • Maintains compliance with applicable OSHA regulations, institutional safety policies, and best practices for construction activities within a museum environment.

  • Oversees the proper operation, maintenance, and safe use of construction tools, equipment, machinery, and vehicles.

  • Ensures all work complies with museum standards for Conservation, Registration, aesthetics, safety, and structural integrity.

  • Serves as the primary in-gallery liaison for contractors, consultants, inspectors, and other project stakeholders during construction and installation activities.

  • Identifies and resolves construction, fabrication, logistical, and scheduling issues to minimize project impacts and maintain operational efficiency.

  • Reviews construction methods and completed work to ensure project specifications, Conservation requirements, design intent, quality standards, and structural requirements are achieved.

  • Ensures appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is available, utilized, and enforced for all personnel working under their supervision.

  • Monitors project progress and provides regular updates, reports, and recommendations to the Senior Manager of Gallery Construction.

  • Coordinates material deliveries, inventory management, and shop operations to support ongoing exhibition and facilities projects.

  • Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Benefits:

  • The expected hourly for this Los Angeles, CA based position is $40.87 to $45.67, subject to change, and the position is eligible for LACMAโ€™s comprehensive benefits package, including pension plan.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma

  • Minimum of 5 years journey-level* experience in carpentry work.

  • In depth knowledge of construction procedures, workflow, equipment, and OSHA guidelines.

  • Knowledge of art museum construction standards, conservation material specifications, and working procedures in museum environments preferred.

  • Ability to read and comprehend construction drawings.

  • Proficiency in Google Workplace software.

  • Familiarity with the use of design software preferred.

  • Excellent organizational and leadership skills.
