POSITION SUMMARY
Under the leadership of the superintendent of schools, the regional superintendent of schools is an executive member of the superintendent's cabinet (regional superintendents and function area chiefs) and holds varying degrees of responsibility for the TK-12 Catholic schools and their students in a distinct pastoral region of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (ADLA). Collaborating, planning, and executing projects, duties and tasks with peer regional superintendents, function area chiefs in the Department of Catholic Schools (DCS), pastoral regional bishops and their staff, and ADLA Chancery departments, the regional superintendent leads a team which oversees schools with specific focus in areas such as, but not limited to: student and staff spiritual formation, student academic performance, curriculum and instruction, school budget and finance, student affairs, personnel relations, facilities, advancement, board development, and ADLA policy compliance.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Because all Archdiocesan employees represent the Roman Catholic Church, they are expected to conduct themselves according to the goals and missions of the Church in performing their work.
The regional superintendent is responsible for leading the vision, strategy, and execution of an integrated series of services and supports to schools designed to increase sustainability, promote academic achievement, advance Catholic formation, and advance school leader accountability so all children served receive a high-quality Catholic education.
Team Leadership and Management- Building, developing, managing, and supporting a high-performing and inclusive team of professionals, including assistant superintendent(s) and administrative support personnel.
- Supervise the assistant regional superintendent.
- Setting a vision and goals for the team and its members, including defining what success looks like, establishing outcome-based goals, and planning and managing execution to meet those goals.
- Facilitating internal professional development with the team to support ongoing learning and strong team culture.
- Promoting cross-functional collaboration within the department, peer regional superintendents, and with departments in the Archdiocese.
- Managing resources, including philanthropic resources, budget, and staff, and ensuring delivery of program goals on budget.
- Leading cycles of strategic planning, implementation, analysis, and evaluation of results to monitor and continually improve student outcomes and achievement.
- Principal Leadership: Motivate, inspire, and steward school principals to be apostolic leaders in the image of Jesus Christ to amplify and advance student achievement. Conduct regular and routine school campus visits in coordination with regional assistant superintendents, pastors and/or principals with a standardized campus walk-through protocol including classroom observations and a feedback loop that ensures follow-up and close-out. Establishment of annual evaluation protocol in partnership and support of pastors (parish schools) and directly with principals and/or presidents (ADLA schools).
- Catholic and Administrative Formation: Supports the Catholic and administrative formation in coordination and planning with function area chiefs to ensure on-boarding and on-going professional development of new and existing school principals and leaders.
- Academic Excellence: In collaboration with principals and the DCS Academic Excellence team, analyze, monitor, and identify strategies to advance student achievement to align instructional and curriculum programs to meet student needs. Form standards with principals for evaluating classroom implementation of academic Actualize goals for school improvement through area-wide planning, direction, program initiatives, benchmarking, and focus on continuous improvement.
- Recruit, Recommend, Hire: In collaboration with pastors, superintendent of schools, regional superintendents, and function area chiefs, identifies vacancies, potential candidates and supports the search process for new school principals in elementary and high schools.
- Annual Calendar: Collaborating with regional superintendents and function area chiefs, contributes and supports the formation of the annual calendar for school and department-based activites.
- Regional School Formation: Coordinate, plan and facilitate school principal, president, and pastor formation through regional meetings to amplify communication, planning and community.
- School Budget Development and Reporting: Collaborate and coordinate with school principals, pastors, and presidents annual budget development, staffing norms, monthly reporting, and on-going reconciliation to ensure positive cash-flow with DCS operations team, ADLA Financial Services, and schools.
- School Support Services: Serves as a conduit and problem solver from the local school and regional level to the DCS and ACC home office various school support needs.
- Regional School Stability Plans: In collaboration with principals/presidents, pastors, function area chiefs, regional bishops and other stakeholders, partners and facilitates the activities related to Regional School Stability Teams (RSST) at the regional level.
- School Governance: In collaboration with schools, function area chiefs and regional bishops, identifies and develops school operating and governance models to achieve sustainability and performance. Provides direct oversight to schools that are administered under the Department of Catholic Schools (update wording!)
- School Condition Index: Collaborating with the DCS operations team, provides and utilizes regular updated data to contribute to the School Condition Index (SCI).
- Advancement and Enrollment Management: Support principals/presidents with strategies and scalable support systems for schools in collaboration with function area chiefs to amplify and form solutions to increase local fund raising and enrollment.
- Cross-Department Liaison: Form functional relationships, feedback loops and systems between pastoral regional offices, DCS function areas and ACC departments to ensure successful accomplishment of tasks, projects, cases, and troubleshooting.
- Represents and acts on behalf of the superintendent of schools, as directed.
- Supporting a strong team culture across the DCS.

- Develop, organize, and implement policies, and long- and short-range plans and activities; provide accountability for financial/resource strategies to support ADLA initiatives and academic goals.

- Engaging in cross-functional collaboration and working groups to identify project synergies across regional and function area teams to accelerate organizational learning.
- Work cooperatively with pastors, administrators, school site staff, parents, community members, and other persons to resolve problems in schools within the region that site administrators have not been able to resolve.
- Regularly visit schools to observe programs in operation, observe classroom instruction, and assist principals and other administrators to serve most effectively as leaders; empower school sites to make decisions that directly serve their students' needs.
- Evaluates organization, policies, and procedures, and approves and recommends
- Support schools and collaborate with the WCEA Commissioner through the WCEA accreditation process.
- Serve as a model of a practicing Catholic and be in good standing with the Church.
- Evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of services to schools regionally.
- Collaborates with stakeholders to achieve goals and monitor success.
- Directs and reviews personnel management, including training, safety, evaluation, and discipline.
- Assume other responsibilities as delegated by the Senior director/Superintendent of Catholic Schools.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, typically:
- A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college/university in education or related field of study (Master's Degree preferred.)
- Active member of a Roman Catholic faith community.
- A graduate degree with an emphasis in education or related field.
- California teaching credential (single subject) and/or administrative services credential.
- Ten years of successful administrative experience as a school administrator.
- Experience in professional executive and/or managerial leadership roles.
- Awareness of school and student management systems.
- Principles of training, employee evaluation, and employee relations.
- Experience with change Leadership, communication strategy and stakeholder management.
- Professional experience which includes at least five years of management experience in large-scale public, private or non-profit/religious institutions, particularly in a K-12 school operating organization.
- A passion and demonstrated commitment to transforming K-12 education, managing, and developing inclusive teams, and equipping diverse leaders with the tools they need to advance Catholic schools, particularly for the highest-need students.
