What is a flexible Christian proofreader?

A Flexible Christian Proofreader is someone who reviews and corrects written materials related to Christian content, such as books, articles, devotionals, or church bulletins, for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and consistency. 'Flexible' typically refers to working on a freelance or part-time basis, with the ability to choose projects and set one's own schedule. This role requires a strong understanding of Christian terminology and values to ensure the materials are both accurate and respectful. Proofreaders may work for publishers, churches, ministries, or individual authors. Attention to detail and familiarity with Christian doctrine, scripture references, and denominational differences are important for success in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a flexible Christian proofreader?

To thrive as a Flexible Christian Proofreader, you need a strong command of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and familiarity with Christian terminology, often supported by relevant education or experience in editing or theology. Proficiency with editing tools like Microsoft Word, track changes, and style guides such as The Chicago Manual of Style is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and sensitivity to faith-based content are standout soft skills for this role. These skills ensure accuracy, maintain doctrinal integrity, and uphold the clarity and tone needed for Christian publications.

What are some common challenges faced in flexible Christian proofreading roles, and how can they be managed?

Flexible Christian proofreading roles often require balancing a variable workload and maintaining high attention to detail, particularly when handling biblical references or theological language. Proofreaders must be sensitive to denominational differences and ensure that doctrinal accuracy is preserved, which can be challenging if texts come from diverse Christian traditions. To manage these challenges, it's helpful to create a consistent review process, use reputable style guides, and communicate regularly with authors or editors for clarification. Flexible scheduling allows for better work-life balance, but also requires strong organizational skills to meet deadlines effectively.

Job description

Description:

For more than 60 years, Tyndale has helped readers discover the life-giving truths of God’s Word. Today we’re one of the largest independently owned Christian publishers in the world. Though our business has grown, our mission remains the same: to open God’s Word to as many as possible in language they can relate to and understand.

Are you passionate about making books and Bibles beautiful and accessible to everyone? Tyndale's composition team turns manuscripts into finished pages — fiction, nonfiction, children's books, and Bibles — working closely with editorial and design colleagues who care as much about craft as you do. We're looking for skilled typesetters to join us on an on-call basis and bring that same care to every project.

As an on-call Typesetter, you'll create the reading experience our customers actually hold in their hands. Working in InDesign, you'll implement interior layouts to editorial and design specifications, then carry those files through proofing and corrections to a clean, print-ready PDF — the last set of eyes before a book or Bible goes to press. It's detail-driven work with a visible result: every layout you build helps make God's Word and Christ-centered content clear, readable, and inviting.

What You'll Do

  • Implement page layouts for books and Bibles in InDesign according to editorial and design specifications.
  • Output page proofs and InCopy files per editorial proofreading requirements.
  • Apply text corrections and design updates to page proofs as needed.
  • Prepare, preflight, and check final print-ready PDF files.

Skills and Qualifications Needed

  • Proficiency with InDesign and Acrobat needed.
  • Experience in book/Bible typesetting strongly preferred.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to collaborate with highly skilled members of other teams are essential.

Work hours will be based on availability and need, but we envision there being 15-29 hours of work per week.

We want to hear more about you and why you are interested in Tyndale and this role, so we highly recommend including a cover letter.
