Job description

Sales Manager – Bicycle Shop

Location: Torrance, California
Employment Type: Full-Time
Industry: Bicycle Retail

⚠️ IMPORTANT — BICYCLE EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

This position requires bicycle industry experience and/or extensive hands-on bicycle knowledge.

To be considered, applicants must meet at least one of the following requirements:

·       2+ years of actual bicycle retail/shop experience, preferably involving bicycle sales, customer service, inventory, or store operations; OR

·       Be an avid, experienced cyclist with extensive knowledge of bicycles, components, accessories, fit, maintenance, and current cycling products.

General retail or sales management experience by itself does not meet this requirement.

Applicants without meaningful bicycle industry experience or extensive bicycle knowledge will not be considered for this position.

Mechanical experience is not required, but the ability to assess a bicycle, understand common mechanical issues, and communicate effectively with the service department is a major plus.

We are looking for someone who already understands bicycles and can step into a bicycle retail environment withminimal product training.

About the Role

We are seeking an energetic, knowledgeable, and results-driven Sales Manager to lead our retail sales team and help grow our bicycle shop.

This is not an entry-level bicycle industry position. The ideal candidate already understands bicycles, bicycle customers, components, accessories, and the day-to-day realities of working in a bicycle shop.

We need a self-starter who is ready to jump in, take ownership, lead the team, solve problems, and help steer the ship from day one.

The Sales Manager will work closely with ownership, the service department, and vendors to ensure the shop operates efficiently while meeting sales and profitability goals.

Key Responsibilities

Sales Leadership

  • Lead and motivate the sales team to achieve monthly and annual sales goals.
  • Develop and implement sales strategies for bicycles, e-bikes, accessories, apparel, and service packages.
  • Monitor sales performance and key retail metrics.
  • Train and coach employees on bicycle product knowledge and effective selling techniques.
  • Ensure outstanding customer service and customer satisfaction.
  • Confidently recommend bicycles, components, accessories, and upgrades based on customer needs.

Store Operations

  • Oversee daily store operations, including opening and closing procedures.
  • Maintain an attractive, organized, and well-merchandised sales floor.
  • Monitor inventory levels and coordinate purchasing and replenishment.
  • Manage POS systems, cash handling, and sales reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies and safety procedures.
  • Take ownership of day-to-day retail challenges and make sound decisions with minimal supervision.

Team Management

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise sales associates.
  • Prepare employee schedules and manage labor costs.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing coaching.
  • Foster a positive, knowledgeable, and team-oriented work environment.
  • Hold employees accountable for customer service, sales performance, product knowledge, and store standards.

Customer Experience

  • Build strong relationships with customers and the local cycling community.
  • Confidently assist customers with bicycle selection, sizing, components, accessories, and e-bike options.
  • Resolve customer concerns professionally and promptly.
  • Organize and support store events, group rides, and community outreach programs.
  • Promote customer loyalty and repeat business.

Vendor & Inventory Management

  • Collaborate with bicycle, component, accessory, and equipment suppliers.
  • Analyze inventory turnover and product performance.
  • Maintain appropriate stock levels of bicycles, e-bikes, parts, accessories, and apparel.
  • Coordinate seasonal purchasing and promotional activities.
  • Identify slow-moving inventory and opportunities to improve product mix and profitability.

Qualifications

Required

·       2+ years of bicycle retail/shop experience OR extensive bicycle knowledge as an avid and experienced cyclist.

·       Strong working knowledge of bicycles, components, accessories, sizing, and current cycling products.

·       Ability to confidently discuss bicycle categories, components, upgrades, and customer use cases.

·       Strong retail sales and customer service skills.

·       Leadership, communication, problem-solving, and organizational abilities.

·       Experience with retail POS systems and inventory management.

·       Ability to work weekends and peak retail periods.

·       Ability to learn our specific procedures quickly and operate with minimal supervision.

Strongly Preferred

  • Previous bicycle shop management or supervisory experience.
  • Mechanical bicycle knowledge and the ability to assess bicycles for potential service or repair needs.
  • Experience selling and working with e-bikes.
  • Knowledge of major bicycle, component, and accessory brands.
  • Familiarity with Shimano, SRAM, Bosch, and other common bicycle and e-bike systems.
  • Experience with Lightspeed, Ascend, or similar bicycle retail software.
  • Experience with bicycle purchasing, inventory planning, and vendor relationships.
  • Active involvement in cycling and/or the local cycling community.

The Person We’re Looking For

We understand that every bicycle shop has its own procedures, systems, and way of doing business. We will train the right person on our operation, but we should not have to train our Sales Manager on the fundamentals of bicycles.

The ideal candidate can walk onto the sales floor, speak confidently with an experienced cyclist, help a new rider choose the right bicycle, understand component differences, recognize when a bicycle needs to be referred to a mechanic, and provide leadership to the sales team.

We want someone who sees what needs to be done and takes action—someone ready to take the wheel and help steer the shop forward.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive base salary.
  • sales commission
  • Employee discounts on bicycles, parts, accessories, and apparel.
  • Sick leave
  • Professional development and industry training.
  • Career growth opportunities.

Success Measures

  • Sales revenue growth.
  • Gross profit performance.
  • Customer satisfaction.
  • Inventory turnover.
  • Employee retention and development.
  • Store organization and operational efficiency.
  • Community engagement and event participation.

Your application should specifically address:

  • Bicycle shop or bicycle retail experience.
  • Years of experience.
  • Cycling background.
  • Familiarity with bicycle brands and components.
  • Mechanical knowledge, if applicable.
  • Previous retail management or leadership experience.

Applications that do not demonstrate the minimum required bicycle experience or knowledge will not be considered.
