WHAT AWAITS YOU.
  • Scout emerging U.S.-based technologies, startups, research institutions, and industry players in the fields of Physical AI, Robotics, Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models, Robotic Foundation Models, and selected AI-enabled software development approaches and tools.
  • Evaluate technology trends, business models, and market developments to identify opportunities relevant for future BMW production systems and manufacturing processes.
  • Support benchmarking activities of humanoid robots, mobile manipulators, foundation models, and AI-enabled automation solutions.
  • Analyze data strategies for large-scale robotics deployment, including data acquisition, labeling, synthetic data generation, and scalable training approaches.
  • Support the planning, execution, and evaluation of Proof of Concepts (PoCs) with technology partners, startups, universities, and industrial suppliers.
  • Develop technology assessments and recommendations considering scalability, maturity, business impact, implementation effort, and strategic relevance for BMW.
  • Create management-ready reports, presentations, and technology overviews to communicate scouting results and project findings.
  • Collaborate with internal BMW stakeholders across production, technology development, innovation management, and digitalization functions.
  • Investigate how Physical AI and Robotics technologies can improve cost, quality, flexibility, and productivity in future manufacturing environments.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.
  • Currently enrolled in a master's degree program at an accredited college or university.
  • US Work Authorization required.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (overall, not just major).
  • Completed at least 60 college credit hours at the time of application.
  • Ability to work full-time (36.25 hours/week).
  • Must submit an unofficial college transcript with your application.

WHAT YOU SHOULD BRING.
  • Field of Study: Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, or related fields.
  • Business fluent English.
  • Strong interest in Physical AI, Robotics, Autonomous Systems, Machine Learning, and emerging technology ecosystems.
  • Basic understanding of robot learning approaches including Vision-Language Models (VLMs), Vision-Language-Action (VLA) models, Reinforcement Learning, and Foundation Models.
  • Familiarity with robotics frameworks and AI development tools such as ROS, Python, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Isaac Sim, Mujoco, as well as an interest in AI-assisted software engineering workflows, or similar environments.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to evaluate technologies, business models, and market developments.
  • Experience conducting technical research, benchmarking studies, or data-driven analyses.
  • Ability to structure complex topics and communicate findings clearly through presentations and written reports.
  • Self-motivated, curious, and hands-on mindset with strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Preferences:
    • Experience with data collection, synthetic data generation, data pipelines, or large-scale AI training workflows or AI-assisted coding, testing, and code review tools.
    • Experience with robot learning, imitation learning, reinforcement learning, or multimodal foundation models.

Undergraduate students: Hourly rate is $32.50.
Graduate students: Hourly rate is $40.00.
