Job Description
The Department of Pathology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is pleased to announce a new recruitment for a pathologist with expertise in Digital Pathology/Clinical Informatic. The main areas of interest are 1) anatomic/surgical pathology (AP) digital solutions requiring experience with WSI imaging and application of artificial intelligence to support clinical operations, education, and research; 2) Molecular and Spatial Omics operations; and 3) Laboratory Information and Electronic Medical Records (Epic/Beaker) systems utilized by the Department of Pathology and the UAB Clinical Enterprise.
The Anatomic & Molecular Pathology faculty in the department includes a diverse group of more than 30 faculty members with expertise encompassing surgical pathology, women's health, molecular pathology, neuropathology, hematopathology, and other subspecialty areas. Faculty are noted for multidisciplinary, academic productivity and national leadership. A strong diverse research portfolio in translational investigations is conducted by the faculty along with a quality teaching program.
The University of Alabama at Birmingham is an outstanding tertiary care institution currently processing over 60,000 surgical pathology specimens per year. The department is actively migrating from Cerner LIS to EPIC/Beaker, with an expected roll-out date of July 2027. The department is also in advanced stages of establishing digital pathology/WSI for day-to-day activities, with parallel efforts to adopt existing, and ongoing development of AI solutions to diagnosis, research, and education.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to assume the role of Director of Laboratory and Pathology Informatics and work closely with the Department of Pathology faculty and operational leadership, HSIS, and the rest of the Physician Informatics team. S/he will work with leadership and teams as indicated above to advance goals of the department and the enterprise in areas including, but not limited to:
  • Optimization of LIS (Beaker) usability to faculty and other end users.
  • Deployment of digital pathology workflows and related software platforms.
  • Optimization of tele-pathology and related video systems.
  • Supervision of day-to-day informatics needs (e.g. inquiries by analysts) and follow throughs to solve defects.
  • AP analytics.
  • Diagnostic integration (e.g. LIS with genomics modules, radiomics, enterprise imaging, etc).

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the mission of the department via active participation in research and teaching programs, training of residents, fellows, and medical students, mentoring and participation in continuing medical education programs.
Required Qualifications
The candidates should have an M.D. or D.O. or M.D. Ph.D., Board Certification in Anatomic Pathology (AP) or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) and be eligible for a license to practice medicine in Alabama. Appointment at the Associate or Full Professor level requires meeting the criteria outlined in the UAB Heersink School of Medicine guidelines for faculty appointment and promotion on the appropriate track. The successful candidate beyond starting Assistant Professors should have a national reputation in academic pathology and a track record of a competitive basic, translational, and/or clinically focused research program.
Preferred Qualifications
Fellowship training in Pathology Informatics or Clinical Informatics is preferred; however, individuals with equivalent experience-such as significant analytics or programming expertise in a clinical setting-are also encouraged to apply.
