What is a frontend developer?

Frontend Developers are professionals who design and build the user-facing parts of websites and web applications. They use technologies like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create interactive and visually appealing interfaces that users interact with directly in their browsers. Frontend Developers work closely with designers and backend developers to ensure a seamless and responsive user experience across different devices and platforms. Their role often includes optimizing website performance, ensuring accessibility, and maintaining code quality.

What is the difference between Frontend Developer vs Web Designer?

AspectFrontend DeveloperWeb Designer

While both roles contribute to website creation, a Frontend Developer focuses on coding and implementing interactive features, whereas a Web Designer emphasizes visual design and user experience. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right career path or job search focus.

How do frontend developers collaborate with designers and backend teams during a project?

Frontend Developers regularly work closely with UX/UI designers to ensure that visual elements are accurately translated into interactive web pages and applications. They also coordinate with backend developers to integrate APIs and manage data flow between the server and the user interface. Regular meetings, code reviews, and collaborative tools like version control systems help streamline communication and maintain consistency across the project. This teamwork is essential to deliver a cohesive and high-performing end product.

What exactly does a front-end developer do?

A front-end developer designs and implements the visual and interactive elements of websites or applications using languages like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. They focus on creating user-friendly interfaces, ensuring responsiveness across devices, and often work with design tools and frameworks to build functional, accessible web experiences.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a frontend developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Frontend Developer, you need a solid grasp of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React or Angular, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git), responsive design tools, and web performance optimization techniques is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong problem-solving abilities help you build intuitive, user-friendly interfaces and collaborate effectively with design and backend teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering high-quality, interactive web applications that meet user and business needs.

Job description

Department:ย Digital Marketing
Reports To: Senior Product Manager, Web Experience & Growth

Direct reports:ย 0

Location: Hybrid, Denver, CO or home-based, Boston, MAย

Position Summary:ย

Why Join Bentley Digital Marketing Now?ย

There has never been a more exciting time to join the Marketing team at Bentley Systems. As a globally established, industry-leading software company, we are undergoing a rapid, high-impact digital transformation. We are heavily investing in modern marketing technology, forward thinking strategies, and data-backed experimentation. Here, you experience a rare professional synergy: the scale of a company whose established products actively shape the world's infrastructure, paired with the agility and "builder" mentality of a startup. We are actively building the future of digital marketing at Bentley, and we are looking for innovators to help us shape it.ย

About the Roleย

We are seeking a highly skilledย Senior Optimizely Developerย to serve as the technical backbone of our digital growth and web experience initiatives. Reporting directly to the Senior Product Manager of Optimizely, you will be the resident technical expert responsible for developing within bothย Optimizely CMSย andย Optimizely Web Experimentation.ย

We want an engineer who is not just a master of the Optimizely stack, but someone who is highlyย AI-curious and forward-thinking. You should be driven by the desire to "go fast" - leveraging AI-assisted coding tools to write cleaner code faster, accelerate test deployment, and rapidly iterate on digital experiences. If you love building scalable architecture while constantly finding innovative ways to speed up your development cycles, this is the role for you.ย

Responsibilities:ย

  • Optimizely CMS Development (Backend & Architecture)ย

    • Component & Template Build:ย Design, develop, and maintain reusable blocks, page templates, and content models within Optimizely CMS (formerly Episerver) to empower marketing teams to launch pages quickly.ย

    • Platform Architecture:ย Ensure the CMS architecture is scalable, secure, and optimized for performance (Core Web Vitals).ย

    • Integrations:ย Build and maintain API integrations between Optimizely CMS and our broader enterprise tech stack (e.g., Salesforce, Marketo, Adobe Commerce, and custom internal systems).ย

  • Experimentation & Personalization (Frontend Execution)ย

    • Complex Test Engineering:ย Code and deploy complex A/B, split, and multivariate tests within Optimizely Web Experimentation. Handle advanced scenarios that go beyond basic WYSIWYG editing, requiring deep DOM manipulation and dynamic content rendering.ย

    • Personalization Deployment:ย Engineer targeted, brand-compliant personalization campaigns tailored to specific B2B user segments and account-based marketing (ABM) lists.ย

    • AI-Assisted Engineering:ย Actively leverage AI coding assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT) to write, debug, and optimize frontend code, drastically reducing the time it takes to deploy complex experiments.ย

    • Server-Side Testing:ย Collaborate on server-side testing initiatives and feature flagging using Optimizely Feature Experimentation (Full Stack) when frontend execution is insufficient.ย

  • Quality Assurance & Code Governanceย

    • Technical QA:ย Conduct rigorous cross-browser and cross-device testing for all CMS deployments and active experiments to ensure a flawless user experience without layout shifts or flicker.ย

    • Code Quality & Best Practices:ย Establish and document technical best practices, coding standards, and governance rules for our Optimizely environments.ย

  • Cross-Functional Collaborationย

    • Partner with CRO & Product:ย Work hand-in-hand with the Senior Product Manager, Senior Manager of CRO, and Manager of CRO to evaluate the technical feasibility of proposed tests, CMS features, and rapidly prototype solutions.ย

    • Collaborate with UX/UI:ย Partner with design teams to translate wireframes and Figma prototypes into pixel-perfect, interactive digital experiences.ย

  • Requires sitting or standing at will while performing work on a computer (or any other physical requirements).ย ย

Qualifications:ย

  • Experience:ย 5+ years of full-stack web development experience, with at least 3+ years of dedicated, hands-on experience developing within the Optimizely ecosystem.ย

  • CMS Backend (Critical):ย Deep expertise inย C#, .NET Core / MVC, and backend architecture specifically for Optimizely CMS (Episerver).ย

  • Experimentation Frontend (Critical):ย Advanced proficiency inย HTML5, CSS3/SASS, and JavaScript (Vanilla, ES6+, jQuery, React/Vue)ย to build complex DOM manipulations and dynamic web experiences for Optimizely Web Experimentation.ย

  • AI & Speed:ย A forward-thinking, "go fast" mentality with demonstrated experience using AI development tools to accelerate coding, debugging, and testing workflows.ย

  • Optimizely Intricacies:ย Deep understanding of Optimizely's specific platform nuances, including Project JS, visual tags, audience targeting logic, anti-flicker snippets, and caching behaviors.ย

  • B2B Web Experience:ย Experience developing for complex enterprise B2B websites, including lead generation funnels and gated content workflows.ย

  • Version Control & CI/CD:ย Strong experience using Git and modern CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions) for seamless code deployment.ย

  • Certifications (Bonus):ย Active Optimizely Developer certifications (CMS or Web Experimentation) are highly preferred.ย
