A From Home Audio Tester is a professional who evaluates and reviews audio equipment, such as headphones, speakers, or microphones, from a remote or home-based setting. Their responsibilities typically include performing structured listening tests, providing feedback on sound quality, usability, and product features, and sometimes filling out detailed reports or surveys for manufacturers or research companies. This role often requires a good ear for audio detail, basic technical skills, and reliable access to the necessary equipment and a quiet environment. From Home Audio Testers may work as freelancers, contractors, or part-time employees, and their work helps companies improve products before they reach the market.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a from home audio tester?

Job description

HOME AUDIO TECHNICIAN - Testing or Repair of HiFi Gear

Audiophiles & Music Lovers Wanted

Who we are

The Music Room is the world’s largest dedicated reseller of pre-owned HiFi Audio Gear. We are a team of music lovers who are dedicated to a singular mission: delivering the very best online shopping experience in the HiFi industry.   We feel that there is nothing more fulfilling than creating a high-performance, 2-channel HiFi system on any budget with carefully selected used components, speakers and cables. At this time, we are seeking to add additional testers and repair technicians to our quality assurance team.

Job Description

Our quality assurance team has two distinct functions that work together on a daily basis. Both positions require a certain balance of efficiency and thoroughness, as the details are important at every stage. The Music Room specializes in HOME AUDIO (not studio, live sound or pro gear), and we process components and speakers from a very wide array of brands and categories - spanning current to “vintage” technology.

TESTER: Our testing technicians are responsible for testing 15-20 pieces of equipment per day, and entering them into our inventory system with highly accurate and detailed descriptions. The job involves working in an open production environment with a dynamic, tight-knit, communicative team. Significant hands-on experience with a wide array of component and speaker technologies within consumer HiFi audio equipment is a must.

The essential functions for TESTERS include, but are not limited to the following:

  • unpacking incoming equipment and handling with care
  • applying critical eyes and ears to each product to verify functionality and quality standards
  • assessing the functional condition and recording any issues
  • writing a description of the cosmetic condition and documenting essential details
  • escalating functional issues to our repair techs for further diagnosis

REPAIR TECH: When our testers uncover an issue or other opportunities to bring the unit up to our high standards, the product generally needs to be seen by one of our qualified repair technicians. The repair tech is responsible for diagnosing, refurbishing and repairing equipment and documenting required details and updates in our ticketing system.

Job duties will include diagnosis and repair of high-end consumer audio equipment, such as amplifiers, speakers, turntables, streamers, tuners and more. Candidates must possess basic knowledge of electronics theory, including principles of voltage, current, Ohm's Law, and the essential functions of components such as resistors, capacitors and transistors. Candidates must also be familiar with the use of test equipment including multimeters and oscilloscopes to perform diagnosis to component level. Specific experience in repairing consumer HiFi audio equipment (or pro audio equivalents) required. Candidates must have experience with component-level troubleshooting of audio electronics as well as soldering.

The essential functions for REPAIR TECHS include, but are not limited to the following:

● Knowledge of amplifier circuitry and circuits

● Experience repairing consumer electronics (non-computer) and PCB soldering

● Evaluating units deemed in need of repair..

● Documenting all phases of the repair in the ticketing system

● Coordinating with customer facing teams and responding to questions as needed

● Ordering and maintaining parts inventory

● Getting creative, such as scavenging parts from aged-out or unrepairable equipment to facilitate repairs on other equipment

● Coordinating with team members to facilitate shipping and receiving repair items

● Managing inventory hygiene of repair backlog

Passion – STAY FOR THE ENCORE – We are passionate about what we do, and we stay connected to each other and our audience through music.  We are not a clock-in/clock-out, “go through the motions” organization.  We have fun, but we also care deeply about our work, and we are fueled by our passion to achieve excellence.

Authenticity – NO CHEESY COVER SONGS – We stay true to the music that moves us with original compositions, performed in High Fidelity-Unfiltered communication.   Integrity. Truth. Leave the “Hotel California” renditions at home.  Let’s make some original music that we can be proud of.
