What is a freelance startup studio?

A Freelance Startup Studio is an organization or individual that helps launch multiple startups by providing resources, expertise, and support on a freelance or project basis. Unlike traditional startup studios, which build startups in-house, freelance startup studios typically work with external clients or founders, offering services such as idea validation, product development, marketing, and fundraising support. This model allows startups to access specialized skills and flexible resources without committing to full-time hires, accelerating their growth and reducing initial costs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance startup studio professional?

To thrive as a Freelance Startup Studio professional, you need entrepreneurial acumen, business development skills, and a strong grasp of startup methodologies, often supported by experience in launching or scaling startups. Familiarity with project management tools (like Trello or Asana), prototyping platforms, and basic financial modeling is common, and certifications in lean startup or agile methodologies can be beneficial. Creativity, resilience, and strong networking abilities are standout soft skills in this role. These skills are essential for successfully ideating, validating, and executing innovative ventures in a highly dynamic and competitive environment.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in a freelance startup studio environment?

Professionals in freelance startup studios often encounter challenges such as balancing multiple projects for various clients, adapting quickly to different industries, and managing time effectively without the structure of a traditional office. Collaboration with remote or contract-based team members can also require proactive communication and strong organizational skills. However, these challenges can foster adaptability, broaden your skill set, and provide valuable networking opportunities within the startup ecosystem.

Venture Builder (HealthTech)

Founders Factory

Denver, CO • On-site

$80K - $94K/yr

Contractor

Job description

Hey, we're Founders Factory

Founders Factory builds and funds startups together with exceptional entrepreneurs and the world's leading companies. Headquartered in London and operating globally, Founders Factory backs visionary founders with capital, dedicated support from a team of expert operators, and unrivalled access to a coalition of industry leading corporate partners. Since 2015, FF has backed 450+ portfolio companies helping them to secure over 500 enterprise pilots with blue chip corporate partners such as Aviva, Northwestern Medicine, Johnson & Johnson Innovation, and HSBC.

The Opportunity:

Health systems globally are burdened by capacity constraints, rising chronic disease, aging populations, and escalating operational costs. Care delivery models built around physical hospitals are increasingly unsustainable. Advances in connected devices, remote diagnostics, and AI-enabled monitoring now make it possible to safely move large parts of care beyond hospital walls while improving outcomes and patient experience.

The big promise of technology in this space is to enable continuous, proactive, and lower cost care particularly across long-term condition management or home-based / community care while allowing scarce clinical resources to focus where they matter most.

We are looking for exceptional Venture Builders who are passionate about building the future of healthcare delivery.

Who are we looking for?

As a Venture Builder, you specialise in taking ideas from zero to venture-backable businesses. You work closely with founders to shape strategy, validate problem spaces, build MVPs, and find early product market fit. This is a hands on, high ownership role. You’ll operate across product, design, growth and tech, moving fast, making decisions, and focusing relentlessly on what creates the most leverage at each stage of a venture. You have a varied skill set and will have demonstrated an interest in tech and entrepreneurship. You will be an advocate for FF’s values and mission and be committed to supporting founders. You are opinionated but evidence led, creative but commercial, and comfortable operating in ambiguity. You care deeply about building products people actually want and businesses that can scale.

Please note that we are looking for Venture Builders who are available for an initial 6-12 month contract (freelance). Our preferred location is New York, but we will be open to considering hybrid approaches for exceptional talent in Austin, Boston or Denver.

Your responsibilities:
  • Owning the end-to-end early build: from problem definition and MVP scoping through to shipping, testing, and iteration

  • Getting products into users hands fast, using lean, experimental approaches to validate assumptions and generate learning

  • Shaping the customer experience and product vision, balancing user needs with commercial and technical realities

  • Working closely with founders to challenge thinking, sharpen focus, and drive momentum, especially when things feel unclear or uncomfortable

  • Helping ventures progress through studio stage gates, supporting founders towards strong, evidence-backed IC decisions

  • Spotting opportunities early by staying close to market dynamics, emerging tech, and real user behaviour

  • Communicating clearly and regularly, sharing progress, learnings, trade-offs, and recommendations with founders and the wider studio

Required skills, experience and mindset:
  • Demonstrated 0→1 experience in digital health or medtech, whether at a startup, through a side project, research, or volunteering (experience applying AI or developing innovative health/medical devices are considered highly advantageous).

  • Driving momentum by subscribing to lean methodologies and an experimental approach, you prioritise speed, learning, and focus over perfection

  • Comfortable wearing multiple hats (product, design, tech, growth) and knowing when to pull in specialist support

  • Strong technical mindset, with the ability to build no-code / low-code solutions, prototypes, or proofs of concept to accelerate validation

  • Commercially curious with the ability to think about ICPs, value propositions, pricing hypotheses, and early GTM alongside product

  • Communicating your ideas, progress and learnings to the team, seeking feedback when needed.

  • Comfortable setting expectations and ways of working with founders, and maintaining strong, honest working relationships

We value people who:
  • Thrive in ambiguity and enjoy solving messy problems

  • Quick thinking and intuition, someone who can balance creativity with objective data

  • A passion for creating products people love, caring about product performance is key

  • The ability to adapt and operate in an ambiguous environment

  • Comfortable with taking calculated risks and learning fast

  • Wanting to continuously improve your skills and productivity, challenging yourself when you can

  • Strong leadership that drives outcomes

  • Being approachable and optimistic

What this role is not
  • Not a pure designer or engineer

  • Not a consultant writing decks from the sidelines

  • Not a 9–5 role

This role is about building, deciding, testing, and moving. This is a fast-moving venture studio environment where momentum matters and timelines can be intense at key moments. Please if you like the sound of a 12 month contract and you've built products from scratch before (yourself).

Note - Sloppy/Lazy AI applications will be rejected.

Compensation Range: $80K - $94K
