What is a freelance patent?

A Freelance Patent job involves providing patent-related services on a flexible, contract basis rather than as a full-time employee of a firm or corporation. Freelancers in this field may assist with patent searches, drafting applications, conducting prior art research, or offering advisory services. They typically work with inventors, startups, or law firms that need specialized patent expertise without hiring a full-time professional. This role requires knowledge of intellectual property laws and may necessitate registration as a patent agent or attorney in some jurisdictions.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a freelance patent?

To thrive as a Freelance Patent professional, you need expertise in patent law, patent drafting and prosecution, and a strong understanding of science or engineering, typically evidenced by a technical degree and relevant legal training or certification. Familiarity with patent databases, legal research tools, and electronic filing systems like the USPTO EFS-Web is commonly required. Attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to work independently are key soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accurate preparation and filing of patent applications, effective client communication, and successful navigation of a competitive and dynamic field.

What types of clients and projects do freelance patent professionals typically work with?

Freelance Patent professionals often work with a diverse range of clients, including independent inventors, startups, established businesses, and sometimes law firms seeking specialized expertise. Projects may involve drafting and filing new patent applications, conducting patentability or freedom-to-operate searches, responding to office actions, or providing strategic IP advice. Work can vary from short-term assignments to ongoing relationships, allowing you to build a diverse portfolio and deepen your expertise in various technical domains. This client variety offers exposure to cutting-edge innovations and makes freelancing a dynamic and engaging career path.

The Associate Art Director partners with the Creative Director to bring the brand's creative vision to life across photography, video, social, and campaigns. This role leads art direction from concept through final execution, ensuring work is visually compelling, cohesive, and aligned with the brand. The ideal candidate combines strong conceptual thinking and visual storytelling with hands-on creative skills, collaboration, and the ability to guide and elevate the work of others.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Partner with the Creative Director to evolve and execute the brand's visual identity, creative strategy, and consistent visual language across channels.
  • Lead art direction for photography, video, social content, and integrated campaigns, ensuring high-quality and on-brand execution.
  • Develop and present original creative concepts, storyboards, visual treatments, mood boards, and high-fidelity mockups.
  • Translate brand strategy and insights into compelling, cohesive "360-campaign" ideas that drive engagement and brand awareness.
  • Oversee creative projects from concept through final delivery, directing photographers, videographers, editors, designers, and freelancers.
  • Provide clear creative direction and feedback to junior designers and creative partners to elevate the overall quality of work.
  • Adapt to feedback, shifting priorities, and tight production timelines while maintaining a high standard of creative excellence.
Required Qualifications
  • 2-4 years of experience in a creative agency or fast-paced in-house creative environment.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing produced photo, video, social, and campaign work.
  • Proven ability to develop insight-driven creative concepts and execute "360-campaign" ideas.
  • Strong experience art directing photo and video shoots.
  • Ability to create shoot decks, storyboards, mood boards, and high-fidelity visual presentations.
  • Strong sketching and visualization skills for brainstorming and concept development.
  • Mastery of Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Familiarity with Figma and modern AI-assisted design tools.
  • Excellent presentation and communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate and defend creative decisions.
  • Comfortable collaborating cross-functionally with brand managers, marketers, copywriters, production teams, and stakeholders.
Desired Qualifications
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to thrive under tight deadlines while maintaining a unified creative vision.
  • Highly adaptable with strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.

Our culture is passionate, entrepreneurial, and energetic. We value innovation through collaboration. And while we work smart and hard, we also connect and celebrate with equal gusto. We host team-building activities, athletic events, and seasonal celebrations to foster community and reward accomplishments. Bottom line? You'll love it here.

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision care
  • 401k package with employer matching
  • Paid Time Off
  • Maternity/Paternity leave
  • Full indoor basketball/volleyball court
