Job Title

MCC Clinical Registered Nurse—Intermediate

Job Description

The MCC Clinical Registered Nurse—Intermediate provides direct nursing care to patients at the Mays Cancer Center. The nurse demonstrates independence when preparing equipment and aiding physicians during patient treatment and examination. The nurse works under the limited supervision of the department leadership.

Responsibilities

The MCC Clinical Registered Nurse—Intermediate is responsible for:

  • Assisting assigned medical provider and mid-level in the clinical setting including but not limited to: the physical examination of patients, performing complex medical testing and providing interpretations of results, consulting with physicians and implementing treatment plan and the administration of medications and injections as needed.
  • Working closely with the assigned medical assistant to ensure all chart preparation is complete and ready for clinic.
  • Working closely with assigned scheduler to ensure referrals, follow up appointments, diagnostic tests, etc. are scheduled accordingly per medical provider/mid-level orders.
  • Calling-in prescriptions and refills for patients.
  • Obtaining prior authorization as needed on medications, diagnostic tests, and other medical procedures.
  • Triaging patient calls and working closely with call center team members.
  • Assisting and arranging for hospital admissions as needed.
  • Following-up on diagnostic tests and labs, and ensuring they are reported to the medical provider.
  • Performing all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

The MCC Clinical Registered Nurse—Intermediate must demonstrate:

  • The ability to function within the required nursing process as defined by the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
  • The ability to support the mission, vision and patient promise throughout all interactions.
  • Effective communication, both written and verbal.
  • Analytical thinking – this role requires analyzing information and using logic to coordinate work within schedule constraints and handle emergent requirements in a timely manner.
  • The ability to participate as an integral part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in providing the highest quality of care to the patient.
  • Required certifications must remain current and valid.
  • The ability to serve as a preceptor and a mentor by fostering a teaching environment. Position eligible for preceptor premium pay with completion of preceptor education and leader approval.

EDUCATION:

Associates Degree in Nursing required.

EXPERIENCE:

Three (3) years of professional nursing experience is required.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

Active TX RN license required.

Active CPR/BLS required.

This position may require the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure per Texas EO-GA-48.
