Job description

Board-Certified US General Surgeon Consultant

We are AMBOSS, and we are looking for a board-certified, US-trained, practicing general surgeon to support our specialty content expansion. This will involve consultancy during the discovery phase of a new specialty board exam Qbank, and during the rollout phase, supporting clinical quality assurance of LLM-generated Qbank questions and content. This will be project-specific and on a freelance basis. In this role, you will apply your clinical expertise to help us refine and validate market data, consult us on scope of practice, common pain points, and do hands-on work on the general surgery board exam Qbank on the AMBOSS platform.

If you are a board-certified physician who values rigorous, evidence-based clinical reasoning and enjoys mentoring the next generation of surgeons, this is an opportunity to influence medical education and help improve board exam preparation for candidates globally.

You Will:
  • Validate market research and consulting on e.g., practice patterns, study patterns, pain points, certification pathways.
  • Review LLM-generated draft questions (stem, answer choices, and explanations) for clinical accuracy, board-exam relevance, and item quality
  • Flag inaccuracies, outdated information, flawed distractors, or missing high-risk content (without having to rewrite content yourself)
  • Optional: Lead brief educational sessions focusing on surgical clinical decision-making or board-exam question conventions
You Bring: Required
  • Medical degree (MD/DO) with completed US general surgery residency training (ABS certification required)
  • Current or recent clinical practice in general surgery in the US (within the last 2 years)
  • Familiarity with the ABS exam content outline (Qualifying/Certifying Exam), with the current exam style and format, and current US clinical guidelines/evidence-based practice
  • Ability to efficiently collaborate asynchronously with fast turnaround
  • Ability to distinguish between board-relevant or clinically useful content and non-essential, nice-to-know subspecialty detail
Bonus
  • Experience with:
    • Medical education, teaching, or item writing (especially for residents or board exam preparation, e.g., ABS item-writing committees, NBME)
    • Clinical decision support or Qbank tools (e.g., AMBOSS, UWorld, TrueLearn)
    • Reviewing or evaluating AI/LLM-generated clinical content
You Enjoy:
  • Flexible, asynchronous work: Contribute your expertise on your own schedule.
  • Direct impact: Knowing your feedback immediately improves the safety and quality of a board exam preparation tool used by general surgery trainees
  • Clinical education: Sharing your specialty knowledge to help non-specialists and an AI-assisted content pipeline understand the nuances of surgical practice

Compensation range: $70-$120/hours
