Job description

The Ark, a nationally award-winning community weekly just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, is seeking an experienced print journalist to run our newsroom day to day. Youโ€™ll set assignments and the weekly budget, manage our two-reporter team plus freelancers, run the editorial meeting and own the editorial calendar and our three special sections, sharing the editing with the executive editor. The Ark is owned by its publisher and its executive editor.

Youโ€™ll work with reporters to guide and develop stories, and youโ€™ll choose your own enterprise reporting. The job carries no routine beat, but everyone here writes โ€” briefs, breaking news and whatever the week demands, alongside your own work. Our print-first paper is committed to the romantic vision of the journalism you went to school for, and that getting it right is better than getting it first.

You should have at least five years at print newspapers, preferably including experience as an editor and in covering government boards and meetings. You're an ace copy editor whose bible is the AP Stylebook, and your own copy files clean. Familiarity with the California Public Records Act and the Brown Act is an advantage. Management experience is welcome, and weโ€™ll also consider a senior reporter ready to step up. The job requires occasional evening and rare weekend work. This is a hybrid role, with Tuesdays and Wednesdays in our downtown Tiburon office. Mondays are remote production days.

Candidates should reside within 30 minutes of our office or be willing to relocate; we cannot pay relocation expenses.

We are an extremely small operation thatโ€™s now short-staffed so, if we are interested, weโ€™ll contact you as soon as possible.

  • Salary is $75,000 annually, exempt.
  • Fully paid Kaiser Permanente medical and vision and Humana dental.
  • Fidelity SIMPLE IRA with 3% company match.
  • Two weeks accruable paid vacation days per year.
  • ~16-day PTO winter-holiday office closure, pre-Christmas to post-New Yearโ€™s Day, aligning with school district.
  • Nine additional paid holidays per year.
  • Nine accruable sick days per year.

The Ark โ€” named the nationโ€™s best small community newspaper for 2026 by the National Newspaper Association and a second-place general-excellence finisher in this yearโ€™s California Journalism Awards, first among print newspapers in its division โ€” is an independent, locally owned weekly serving the San Francisco Bay Areaโ€™s Southern Marin communities of Tiburon, Belvedere and Strawberry.
