What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Developer, you need strong programming skills, a solid grasp of software development principles, and a portfolio showcasing relevant experience, often supported by a degree or certifications in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and popular frameworks or languages (e.g., JavaScript, Python, React) is typically required. Excellent communication, time management, and self-motivation are essential soft skills for managing client relationships and meeting deadlines independently. These abilities are crucial for delivering high-quality work, maintaining client satisfaction, and sustaining a successful freelance career.

What are some common challenges freelance developers face when managing multiple projects, and how can they be addressed?

Freelance developers often juggle several projects at once, which can lead to challenges like managing deadlines, communicating with different clients, and maintaining consistent code quality. To address these issues, effective time management tools, clear communication practices, and robust project tracking systems are essential. Regular check-ins with clients, setting realistic expectations, and using version control platforms can help ensure smooth project delivery and client satisfaction.

What is the difference between Freelance Development vs In-House Development?

AspectFreelance DevelopmentIn-House Development
CredentialsTypically requires a portfolio, coding skills, and sometimes certificationsRequires similar skills, often with company-specific onboarding
Work EnvironmentRemote or client-site, flexible hoursCompany office or remote, fixed hours
Employer & Industry UsageFreelancers work with multiple clients across industriesFull-time employees within a single organization
Search & Comparison IntentHigh overlap in skills and project typesDifferent employment structure and benefits

Freelance Development involves independent professionals working on various projects for multiple clients, offering flexibility and diverse experience. In-House Development refers to full-time employees working within a single organization, often with company-specific tools and processes. Both roles require similar technical skills but differ in work environment, employment benefits, and project management style.

What is freelance development?

Freelance development refers to software development work done independently by individuals, rather than as a full-time employee of a company. Freelance developers are typically self-employed and take on projects for various clients, working remotely or on-site as needed. They may specialize in web development, mobile app development, or other programming areas, and manage their own schedules, contracts, and payments. This career path offers flexibility and variety, but also requires strong self-management and business skills.

Job description

Infinite Global is an international communications firm specializing in PR, Content & Campaigns, and Crisis & Litigation. Our clients are ambitious, complex organizations that need to engage with sophisticated audiences. We provide the experience, skills and insight to drive brands forward and, in special situations, to deploy strategies to defend clients from reputational risk.
Our roots are in the legal sector, where our unrivaled depth of knowledge allows us to provide counsel to the world's largest, most profitable and most specialized law firms. Other professional services firms look to us for a nuanced understanding of their businesses, a clear sense of the kinds of stories that make news, and tested knowledge of when and how to engage the media.
Our unwavering client focus sets us apart and our approach and success earns accolades from our clients and peers. We are consistently named among PR News' "Agency Elite" and "Top Places to Work in PR" and have been for recognized as the "Best PR Firm" by the National Law Journal seven times.
INFINITE is expanding its roster of freelance talent for content work with law firm clients.
We're looking to connect with experienced freelancers across three roles:
Freelance writers (U.S.-based)
We're seeking writers with 8+ years of experience in the legal profession-either as legal reporters and/or in-house in writing/comms roles at law firms.
Our work includes drafting award nominations, ghostwriting thought leadership, and contributing to larger content initiatives. Topics range from business of law to substantive legal issues (but not overly technical, footnoted articles). Assignments typically involve interviewing law firm partners and collaborating closely with lawyers to refine and finalize content.
Ideal candidates:
• Bring a strong journalistic approach to storytelling
• Are comfortable working with law firm partners and firm leadership
• Have experience writing across corporate practice areas (but please share your favorite practice areas)
• Have a deep understanding of the legal industry
Freelance copyeditor / proofreader
We're looking for someone with experience copyediting legal-facing content who is comfortable working with technical terminology (but not highly academic legal writing with heavy citations).
You'll be editing:
• Award nominations
• Thought leadership
• Publications (e.g., alumni magazines, annual outlooks)
Strong AP style knowledge is essential, along with the ability to adapt to client-specific styles.
Freelance project manager
We're seeking a detail-oriented project manager to oversee the development of custom, magazine-style publications for law firms.
Responsibilities include:
• Building and managing project timelines
• Assigning articles in collaboration with the managing editor
• Tracking progress across multiple contributors
• Maintaining version control and file organization
• Providing weekly status updates to clients
An upcoming project is expected to require ~5 hours per week through the second half of 2026.
We're intentional about matching freelancers to the right clients and projects, so we may not have immediate opportunities for everyone-but we'd love to start a conversation.
The current compensation range for this position is $65.00 - $80.00 per hour. Individual compensation varies based on job related factors, including relevant experience, qualifications, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, revenue-based metrics, and business or organizational needs.
