What is a freelance church communications specialist?

Freelance church communications refer to independent professionals who help churches with their messaging, branding, and outreach efforts. These freelancers may manage social media accounts, design newsletters, create promotional materials, or advise on communication strategies. Their goal is to help churches effectively share their message with their congregation and the wider community, often on a project-by-project basis. Freelancers bring flexibility and specialized skills that churches may not have in-house.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a freelance church communications specialist?

To thrive as a Freelance Church Communications specialist, you need strong writing, editing, and digital communication skills, often supported by experience in marketing or public relations. Familiarity with social media platforms, email marketing tools, content management systems, and basic graphic design software is typically required. Creativity, adaptability, and excellent interpersonal skills help you engage diverse audiences and collaborate effectively with church staff and volunteers. These skills are crucial for conveying messages clearly, growing community engagement, and promoting the church’s mission in a dynamic, digital environment.

What are common challenges freelance church communications specialists face when working with multiple congregations or ministries?

Freelance church communications professionals often navigate diverse expectations and varying levels of digital literacy among different congregations. Balancing multiple clients requires strong organizational skills and the ability to tailor messaging to each church's unique culture and audience. Additionally, freelancers may need to educate clients on best practices for social media and digital outreach, while managing tight deadlines around church events and holidays. Effective communication, flexibility, and proactive planning are key to overcoming these challenges and building strong client relationships.

Job description

At Elevation Church, we look to link arms in ministry with those who are passionate about stepping into their God-given calling. While we’re a staff from all different backgrounds and walks of life, our mission is the same - to reach people with the Gospel. We’re grounded in scripture and guided by our values, so check out our website www.elevationchurch.org to be sure you’re aligned before you step into the application process with us, particularly paying attention to our Beliefs and our Code.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Create high-quality designs for weekend experiences, sermon series, digital content, social media, and special projects
  • Collaborate with the Creative Director, writers, and programming teams to develop strong visual concepts that communicate messages clearly and creatively
  • Help lead the design direction for campaigns and series—contributing to concept development, look and feel, and execution
  • Maintain and elevate the visual standards of the church’s brand across all platforms
  • Execute designs across multiple formats (broadcast, social, web, print, environmental) with excellence and consistency
  • Provide creative feedback and direction to other designers and freelancers
  • Partner with video teams, animators, and other creatives to bring cohesive, multi-platform experiences to life
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Prepare and deliver final files for production across various media
MUST-HAVES
  • Active participation in a church (we look for a lifestyle of inviting people to church, volunteering, generosity, and prioritizing community)
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating a high level of design, typography, and layout expertise
  • Proven ability to lead design projects and contribute to creative direction
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign)
  • Strong understanding of branding, visual systems, and storytelling through design
  • Ability to operate with both creative vision and executional excellence
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate across teams
  • High attention to detail with a commitment to excellence
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
NICE-TO-HAVES
  • Experience working in a non-profit environment or ministry setting
  • Knowledge of motion design or animation
  • Experience designing for broadcast or large-scale environments
  • Familiarity with social media trends and digital-first design strategies
  • Experience working with AI-assisted design tools
DAY-TO-DAY
  • We’re a Sunday-Thursday work environment. Monday-Thursday, we’re in the office (8:30AM - 5PM); on Sunday, we’re supporting the weekend worship experience either directly in our roles or by choosing a weekly serving opportunity at one of our Elevation Church campuses.
  • There’s a lot to accomplish each week, so we’re pretty fast-paced. We’re also not afraid to pivot a strategy or project quickly to meet the needs of the weekend - adaptability is a key competence for us.
  • Yes, we work hard. But we’re good at playing hard, too. We’re a creative staff, so there’s no shortage of activities around our offices to have some fun!
  • You can’t help but grow on our staff. You’ll be around some incredible people. Professional development opportunities will be all around you, both in structured and unstructured ways.
  • We expect you to be disciplined in your spiritual practices - be in your Bible, spend time with the Lord in prayer, meditate on and apply the weekly sermon.
  • Bring your full self to every project, conversation, and initiative at hand.
BENEFITS
  • Elevation Church pays 100% of every employee’s medical benefits for full-time staff
  • 403b with 4% match
  • Dental & Vision benefits
  • Paid time off for life, vacations, and rest
  • Elevation Church subsidizes 6 sessions of counseling annually
  • Basic Life Insurance for employee, spouse, and child(ren)
