What is a Freelance Celebrity?

A Freelance Celebrity is an individual who has achieved fame or recognition and operates independently rather than being exclusively managed or contracted by a specific agency, brand, or media network. They might participate in various projects, endorsements, events, or collaborations on a contract-by-contract basis. This allows them greater flexibility and control over their career choices and public image. Freelance celebrities often manage their own schedules, partnerships, and public appearances, sometimes with the help of personal managers or agents.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Celebrity, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Celebrity, you need a strong personal brand, public relations skills, and expertise in self-promotion, often supported by a recognizable portfolio or social media presence. Familiarity with digital marketing tools, social media platforms, and content creation software is essential. Adaptability, networking abilities, and resilience are crucial soft skills for building and maintaining a public image. These skills and qualities are important for standing out in a competitive industry and sustaining long-term visibility and career growth.

What are some unique challenges freelance celebrities face when managing their personal brand and client relationships?

Freelance celebrities often need to balance maintaining a consistent public image with adapting to diverse brand collaborations and appearances. Managing client expectations, scheduling, and negotiations without the support of a dedicated agency can be demanding, requiring strong organizational and communication skills. Additionally, freelance celebrities must proactively seek new opportunities and network to keep their visibility high while safeguarding their reputation in a competitive industry.

What is the difference between Freelance Celebrity vs Influencer?

AspectFreelance CelebrityInfluencer
CredentialsMay have acting, singing, or entertainment industry experienceNo formal credentials required, often self-taught or hobbyists
Work EnvironmentVaries from events, photoshoots, or personal projectsPrimarily online platforms like social media
Employer/Industry UsageHired by brands, production companies, or agenciesCollaborates with brands directly or via agencies
Search & Comparison IntentHigh-profile, entertainment-focused collaborationsBrand promotion, personal branding, audience engagement

While both Freelance Celebrities and Influencers work independently and promote brands, Freelance Celebrities are often recognized for their entertainment skills and work in traditional media or events. Influencers primarily build their reputation online through social media, focusing on audience engagement and digital content. Understanding these differences helps brands choose the right partner for their marketing campaigns.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 5 years experience working in online media, and will be brimming with unique and exciting story ideas. You should have a passion for all things real estate, as well as a keen interest in celebrity and lifestyle stories. This role requires excellent writing skills, a keen news sense, exceptional time management, and the ability to turn around clean, concise, and engaging copy in a short space of time.

You should also be up to date on the latest AI tools and have a good understanding of how they can be implemented to better your daily workflow. In this role, you will be responsible for writing a set number of stories each day, as well as pitching ideas, optimizing content for SEO, and helping to assign stories to a team of freelancers. We are looking for a team player who is willing to throw themselves into a wide variety of stories with enthusiasm.

What You'll Do:

  • You need to have a keen interest in the real estate industry, as well as the latest celebrity and pop culture stories, and must keep up to date on trends.
  • You should be willing to work with your editor to assign stories to freelancers and edit incoming freelancer copy.
  • This is a hybrid role where you'll be required to work in our New York City office three days a week.

How We Work:

We balance creativity and innovation on a foundation of in-person collaboration. For most roles, our employees work three or more days in our offices, where they have the opportunity to collaborate in-person, adding richness to our culture and knitting us closer together.

What You Bring:

  • 5+ years working in online media or print journalism for a lifestyle and/or celebrity-focused publication/vertical.
  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Familiarity with content management systems.
  • A solid understanding of SEO.
  • Strong experience with social media.

At Realtor.com, we recognize that attracting the best talent is key to our strategy and success as a company.  As a result, we aim for flexibility in structuring competitive compensation offers to ensure we are able to attract the best candidates.
