How much do fpga engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 26, 2026, the average yearly pay for fpga engineering in the United States is $147,315.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $130,000.00 and $167,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Is FPGA engineering a good career?

FPGA engineering is a specialized field involving designing and implementing digital circuits using Field-Programmable Gate Arrays. It offers strong job growth, competitive salaries, and opportunities in industries like telecommunications, aerospace, and defense. Success in this role typically requires knowledge of hardware description languages such as VHDL or Verilog and experience with FPGA development tools.

What are some typical challenges FPGA engineers face when working on complex hardware designs?

FPGA engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing resource constraints (like logic cells and memory), meeting stringent timing requirements, and ensuring signal integrity across high-speed interfaces. Debugging issues can be particularly complex since problems may arise from both hardware and HDL code. Effective collaboration with hardware, software, and validation teams is essential to ensure seamless integration and successful project completion.

What is FPGA engineering?

FPGA engineering involves designing, developing, and implementing systems using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). FPGAs are integrated circuits that can be programmed after manufacturing to perform specific logic functions, making them highly flexible and adaptable for various applications such as telecommunications, aerospace, and consumer electronics. FPGA engineers typically use hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog to configure these chips and optimize them for speed, efficiency, and reliability.

Is FPGA going to be replaced by AI?

FPGA engineering involves designing and implementing hardware logic, which remains essential for applications requiring high performance and low latency. While AI can optimize certain processes and algorithms, it does not replace the need for FPGA development, especially in fields like telecommunications, aerospace, and embedded systems where hardware customization is critical.

What engineers make $500,000?

Highly experienced FPGA engineers working in specialized industries such as aerospace, defense, or high-frequency trading can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $500,000 annually, especially with advanced skills in hardware design, verification, and FPGA development tools. Such compensation often includes bonuses, stock options, or other incentives for senior-level roles.

What engineers make $300,000 a year?

Senior FPGA engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills in hardware design, and certifications can earn salaries approaching or exceeding $300,000 annually, especially in high-demand industries like aerospace, defense, and telecommunications. Compensation often includes bonuses and stock options, reflecting the complexity and critical nature of their work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FPGA Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an FPGA Engineer, you need a strong background in digital design, hardware description languages (such as VHDL or Verilog), and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with FPGA development tools (like Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus), simulation software, and sometimes industry certifications are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively set outstanding FPGA engineers apart. These capabilities ensure the delivery of reliable, high-performance hardware solutions that meet complex project requirements.

Job description

Northwood is a modern space infrastructure company bringing the benefits of space to the masses through advanced communications technology. We are building a global network of phased array ground stations that enable real-time, reliable communication for satellite missions such as national security, global connectivity, and disaster response. With a vertically integrated approach, Northwood designs, builds, and rapidly deploys scalable systems that power the next generation of space missions. If you like solving complex challenges and seeing your work deployed around the world with real impact, Northwood is the place to do it.
HEAD OF FPGA ENGINEERING:
As Head of FPGA at Northwood Space, you will be responsible for executing on our ambitious digital roadmap to connect Earth and space. You would own the FPGA design for Northwood's phased array systems, which integrate high-speed signal processing and data transport. Simultaneously, you would be laying a strong foundation with FPGA best practices and automated infrastructure. As a player-coach, you lead by example and by providing the context and mentorship for a team of 5 - 10 FPGA engineers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Guide project architecture and work with other teams to nail down interfaces and requirements. Plan and prioritize work for the FPGA team to deliver mission-critical projects on aggressive timelines.
  • Mentor and develop the existing team of ~5 FPGA engineers, in addition to recruiting new talent to support upcoming projects.
  • Steer the development of FPGA internal processes and infrastructure that allows the team to move rapidly.
  • Dive in as deep as necessary to keep projects moving.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • 7-10+ years of professional experience and typically at least a Bachelors in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage teams and lead complex projects
  • Expert in RTL Design (SystemVerilog or VHDL)
  • Experience working on FPGA SoCs like Zynq or similar
  • Experience with FPGA build systems and automated testing
  • Experience with DSP and/or networking on FPGA
  • Experience with schematic review and hardware bring-up
  • Proficient in Python
  • Strong work ethic and drive to succeed
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced and demanding start-up atmosphere
  • Willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed
  • In-person in Torrance

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Startup experience
  • Aerospace experience
  • Experience with C/C++ or rust

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
This position requires successfully obtaining and maintaining a Top Secret Security Clearance as a condition of employment. While the clearance may not be immediately necessary upon hire, we encourage you to initiate the application process promptly upon accepting this offer. Your ability to secure the necessary clearance is essential for fulfilling key responsibilities of the role. Should you be unable to obtain it, Northwood Space reserves the right to modify or terminate your employment to align with optional needs.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
