Position Summary
The position develops new, innovative, and marketable products for the cosmetic, personal care, skincare and OTC industry. The formulator works individually and as a team in creating and refining formulas from conception and through reverse engineering. They assist in troubleshooting formulations, tech transfers, and scale up to pilot batches alongside the Commercialization team. They also support the needs of production by performing calculations, assessments and adjustments for ongoing operations. The position requires GDP knowledge for creating written instructions and formula BOMS. They ensure the stability and compatibility of their products through experience and data-driving testing for the successful launch and execution of their products.
Responsibilities and Essential Duties
  • Works in a safe manner in the laboratory.
  • Transforms market trends into technology by developing new and innovative products.
  • Ability to breakdown, reverse engineer and benchmark products.
  • Creates and refines formulas that align to the plant's manufacturing capabilities.
  • Assists in troubleshooting problems with formulations in development, scale up and production.
  • Supports tech transfer projects, working cross-functionally with Sales, Commercialization and Operations.
  • Assists with pilot batches, scale up and line trails alongside the Commercialization team.
  • Keeps up to date with new raw materials, ingredients and technologies through vendor interaction, training, and market research.
  • Conducts stability testing and compatibility testing of products under development along with the stability chemist.
  • Provides written instructions for adjustment of a batch when needed.
  • Maintains a clean and organized lab environment
  • Ensures and supports the regulatory compliance of developed products.
  • Follows GDP in the creation of Master Formula documents, SDS, BOM and Raw material coding.
  • Completes and document required training based on job position as illustrated by LMS and training matrix.
  • These job responsibilities can change over time.

Technical Skills Required
  • Basic knowledge of US and global cosmetic regulations and understand regulatory monographs and standards.
  • Strong working knowledge about commonly-used cosmetic raw materials.
  • Efficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, & PowerPoint).
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work as a team player.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Experience Required
  • BS/BA in Chemistry or related Science or AS with applicable work experience.
  • 2 to 5 years formulation experience in consumer products and cosmetics industry.
  • Experience with formulating topical OTC products.
  • Experience with bench top to pilot scale-up.
  • Experience in using Formulation software, Formulator preferred.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to climb stairs, stand for periods of time and have the ability to bend, squat, kneel, turn, and stoop.
  • Requires some walking, as well a sitting for periods of time.
  • Physically able to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Frequent exposure to varying temperatures, loud noises, heavy machinery, fumes, or airborne particles, electrical, chemicals and moving parts.
  • Occasional use of computer screen.
  • Must be able to discern differences in colors and shades.
