Job Summary
The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in Employee Occupational Health (EOH) provides comprehensive clinical care for Duke Health System employees, Duke University employees, and affiliated outlying clinics. This role includes the evaluation and management of work-related injuries, occupational exposures, and fitness-for-duty assessments. The APP collaborates closely with faculty physicians and an interdisciplinary team to support employee health, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence across EOH services.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Perform clinical duties diagnosing and treating patients with work-related injuries, occupational exposures to hazards (chemical, physical, and infectious), and other special work risks. Perform DOT physicals, placement health reviews, fitness-for-duty evaluations.
  • Conduct health reviews for employee requests for reasonable accommodation under the ADA. Obtain background medical and functional information and communicate as needed with treating healthcare providers. Work closely with EOH faculty physicians performing ADA health reviews and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Review and approve FMLA requests.
  • Contribute to clinic operational effectiveness by identifying opportunities for improvement in short and long-term policies and workflows related to quality of medical care and customer service.
  • Collaborate with faculty and team members to manage and improve medical surveillance programs.
  • Obtain patient histories, perform physical examinations, and document findings in the patient's medical record, including progress notes and narrative discharge summaries; prepare patient workups and summaries noting pertinent positive and negative findings.
  • Order and schedule laboratory studies and diagnostic procedures; educate patients on purpose, preparation, nature and anticipated outcomes of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Perform urgent-care level diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for medical and surgical conditions and prescribe necessary treatment and services including wound closure and dressings, splints and braces, prescription drugs, and instructions for rehabilitation plans. Medical case management and monitoring of the recovery process until discharge.
  • Participate in departmental continuing education and administrative QI initiatives.
  • Review the work of clinical staff and assist with training and onboarding of new personnel.
  • Participate in teaching allied health learners in the clinical setting.
  • Review medical literature and/or guidelines to support updates to EOH protocols and procedures; implement updates/changes in collaboration with faculty and team members.

Education and Experience
• Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner program required
• Current licensure as a PA or NP in the State of North Carolina required
• Minimum of 2-3 years of experience as an Advanced Practice Provider strongly preferred
• Prior experience in occupational health preferred but not required
Licensure and Certifications:
  • Current DEA & BLS licensure
  • Current CPR/AED certification
  • For PAs: National certification as PA-C

Monday-Friday, day shift, with flexibility to meet clinic needs.
