What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a Fluid Routing Solutions Engineer role, and why are they important?

Success in a Fluid Routing Solutions Engineer role requires a strong background in mechanical or chemical engineering, fluid dynamics, and experience with piping or tubing systems, typically supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with CAD software, fluid simulation tools, and industry standards (such as ASME or ISO) is often essential. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These abilities ensure the safe, efficient design and implementation of fluid systems critical for industrial, automotive, or manufacturing operations.

What is the difference between Fluid Routing Solutions vs Fluid Systems Technician?

AspectFluid Routing SolutionsFluid Systems Technician
CertificationsOften requires certifications in fluid dynamics, piping, or HVAC systemsTypically holds certifications in plumbing, HVAC, or fluid systems
Work EnvironmentDesign, installation, and maintenance of fluid routing systems in industrial or commercial settingsInstallation, troubleshooting, and repair of fluid systems in various facilities
Industry UsageUsed in industries like manufacturing, HVAC, and process engineeringCommonly employed in plumbing, HVAC, and maintenance services

Fluid Routing Solutions professionals focus on designing and implementing complex fluid pathways, while Fluid Systems Technicians handle the installation and repair of existing systems. Both roles require technical knowledge but differ in scope and responsibilities.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Fluid Routing Solutions, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Fluid Routing Solutions often encounter challenges such as ensuring leak-free connections, selecting compatible materials for different fluids, and optimizing system layouts for efficiency and safety. Addressing these issues typically involves close collaboration with engineering teams, regular testing and inspection, and staying up-to-date on industry standards and best practices. Proactive communication with suppliers and cross-functional teams also helps in identifying and resolving potential issues early in the design or installation process.

What are Fluid Routing Solutions?

Fluid Routing Solutions refer to the systems, components, and technologies used to direct, control, and manage the flow of fluids—such as liquids or gases—within industrial, automotive, or manufacturing environments. These solutions typically involve hoses, tubes, fittings, valves, and connectors designed to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable movement of fluids. Fluid routing is critical for applications like cooling, lubrication, fuel delivery, and hydraulic systems, helping to maintain performance and compliance with safety standards. Companies specializing in Fluid Routing Solutions often provide custom engineering and integration services to meet specific industry requirements.

Position Overview
We are seeking a Mid-Level Design Engineer with high proficiency in CREO to support fluid line routing and production CAD activities on cutting-edge aerospace programs. In this role, you will be responsible for the 3D routing, modeling, and drawing release of fluid system lines, tubes, and associated hardware within complex aerospace vehicle assemblies. You will work as an integral member of a broader CAD team preparing design packages for transition to production, ensuring models and drawings are accurate, complete, and release-ready. Experience with fluid systems or propulsion line routing in aerospace industry is preferred.
Key Responsibilities
Fluid Line Routing & 3D Modeling
  • Develop and maintain 3D fluid line routes within complex vehicle assemblies using CREO, adhering to program routing standards, bend radius requirements, and clearance constraints
  • Route tubing, flex lines, and rigid fluid lines for propellant, pressurant, pneumatic, hydraulic, and/or purge systems as required by program scope
  • Coordinate routing paths with structures, thermal, electrical, and propulsion teams to resolve interference conflicts and maintain system accessibility
  • Apply and maintain accurate line end conditions, fitting configurations, and support/clamp locations within the 3D model
  • Perform clash and clearance checks and resolve issues in coordination with cognizant engineers
  • Manage model configurations and revisions in accordance with program CAD standards and PLM workflows
2D Drawing Production & Release
  • Produce complete 2D engineering drawings for fluid lines, tube assemblies, and associated fluid system hardware in .drw format
  • Ensure drawings include all fabrication details required for production, including bend tables, end fittings, material callouts, and applicable process notes
  • Prepare drawings to be fully review-ready and suitable for release to manufacturing
  • Incorporate review markups and manage drawing revisions through release
  • Support drawing package organization and configuration control in WindChill or equivalent PLM system
Production Transition Support
  • Support the CAD team's efforts to prepare the design baseline for production release, including model and drawing audits, completeness checks, and drawing tree organization
  • Assist in identifying and resolving open design items, drawing discrepancies, and model maturity gaps ahead of production milestones
  • Coordinate with manufacturing, quality, and program engineering teams to ensure design packages meet production entry requirements
  • Support as-designed-to-as-built reconciliation activities as needed during early production phases
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field
  • 3–8 years of experience in aerospace or defense engineering design, with demonstrated CREO proficiency
  • Hands-on experience with 3D line routing and tube assembly modeling in CREO
  • Experience producing complete 2D engineering drawings in .drw format
  • Familiarity with fluid system components including tubing, fittings, flex lines, clamps, and supports
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to produce review- and release-ready deliverables
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a collaborative CAD team environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience routing fluid lines for propellant, pressurant, pneumatic, or hydraulic systems on launch vehicles, spacecraft, or complex aerospace ground support equipment
  • Familiarity with tube fabrication requirements including bend tables, flare and flareless end fittings, and tube material specifications
  • Experience supporting design-to-production transitions, including drawing release and manufacturing package preparation
  • Experience with WindChill PLM for model and drawing configuration control
  • Familiarity with design review processes and requirements management frameworks
  • Experience with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) per ASME Y14.5
  • Knowledge of applicable fluid system standards (e.g., AS4395, NAS, MS fittings)
