Job description

As an RN or LPN within our Bowen Health Recovery Center, you will provide psychiatric nursing services to patients which includes administering medication and patient assessment through daily interactions. This position is nontraditional in the nursing arena and functions at a slower pace in the sense that patients come and going as needed through the 5am - 1pm time frame on weekdays and 6am - 10am on weekends usually once a month. You will work directly with an incredible medical team, including a doctor that is dedicated to mentoring our nurses to operate at their best ability.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Education: RN or LPN license in the State of Indiana required.
  • Experience:  Prefer two (2) years in a mental health setting.
  • Valid driver’s license and active liability insurance.
  • Satisfactory results from criminal background check.
  • Must be a minimum 21 years of age.

Duties/Responsibilities: 

Below are the primary duties and essential functions of an employee in this position. While not all tasks may be performed by every employee in this role, all employees are expected to perform related tasks as needed. These essential functions must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation. 

  • Administer methadone in accordance with all state and federal regulations.
  • Responsible for documenting in EMR (Methasoft) on all medication dispensed and nursing progress notes.
  • Document all other pertinent data in EMR (Methasoft) such has health status and updates.
  • Participate in multidiscipline team meetings and document changes in treatment plan in the EMR.
  • Assist medical doctor with history and physicals and external referrals.
  • Follow up with external referral source to ensure documentation is received and provided to the medical doctor and other members of the treatment team.
  • Ensure client is updated on all urine drug screens and documentation of results is in EMR.
  • Utilize nursing process to assess and develop nursing plan to address health problems.
  • Assist nursing supervisor with TB testing after training and certification received.
  • Provide education and educational material to clients regarding recovery and co-occurring health concerns including, but not limited to, side effects of medication and prevention of common related illness or disease.
  • Could potentially travel to take medication to other facilities. 
  • Notify doctor and other members of treatment team of changes in health status and/or adverse reactions to medication such as over sedation.
  • Under the supervision of nursing supervisor maintain medication inventory and participate in accurate reconciliation at the end of the shift.
  • Facilitate transfer of patients to another OTP clinics should the occasion arise, such as relocation of client out of state.
  • Establish user account for Lighthouse Registry and utilize as needed, to track dosing and prevent diversion.
  • If an emergency occurs and patient is unresponsive, assess and provide emergency nursing intervention CPR and Narcan administration, if assessment determines such actions are needed to preserve life, until EMS arrives.

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Working knowledge of OTP state and federal regulations for dispensing Methadone
  • Familiar with and ability to comply with standards of professional conduct
  • Possess critical thinking skills and an ability to problem solve
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail and focus on accuracy with dispensing of medication
  • Ability to calculate inventory of Methadone and Buprenorphine
  • Knowledge of Nursing Process and excellent assessment skills
  • Ability to function as a multidiscipline team member and develop collaborative working relationships with staff and medical doctor
  • Willingness to learn addictions theory and effective recovery treatment modalities.
  • Remain updated on literature regarding substance use treatment
  • Knowledge of co-occurring morbidities in behavioral health and physical health
  • Maintain required level of education, training and licensing qualifications
  • Strong verbal skills with ability and sensitivity to diverse cultures, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds of clients
  • General computer skills and ability to efficiently navigate computer software (Methasoft)
  • Knowledge of Bowen Health Policies and Procedure, Safety Standards and Emergency Plan.
  • Knowledge and skill related to CPR certification and Narcan Administration.
