Job description

Symetra has an exciting opportunity for a Staff Software Engineer to join our team and lead the evolution of our Stop Loss platform.

About the role

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will serve as the technical lead for the Stop Loss platform, driving architecture, design, and delivery of scalable solutions while remaining hands-on with development. You will set technical direction, establish engineering standards, and lead critical practices across testing, CI/CD, and production reliability. This is a highly influential individual contributor role where you will mentor senior engineers and provide technical leadership across teams.

What you will do

  • Serve as the technical lead for the Stop Loss platform, guiding architecture, technical direction, and overall delivery across teams
  • Develop secure, high-quality, high-performing code while driving code reviews and setting standards for versioning, reusability, and performance optimization
  • Lead testing strategy, CI/CD pipelines, and production support to ensure reliability, scalability, and strong quality practices
  • Define scalable system architecture, establish design patterns, and create technical documentation to enable consistent execution
  • Mentor senior engineers and provide hands-on technical leadership, guiding work and innovation without formal people management responsibilities

Compensation

Salary Range: $141,600 - $236,000 base plus eligibility for the company annual bonus program.

Who You Are:

  • High School Diploma is required, plus a Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a related field
  • 12-15 years of experience in software engineering with deep expertise in platform engineering, full-stack development, and hands-on coding
  • Proven technical leader with strong system architecture skills and experience guiding decisions across multiple teams or platforms
  • Experienced in managing and evaluating vendor solutions and partnerships, including large consulting organizations
  • Strong communicator who can influence, mentor, and collaborate effectively with engineers and senior leaders without formal authority
  • Personable, adaptable, and growth-oriented, with a willingness to learn new industries and leverage modern practices, including AI-assisted development tools
  • Experience with, or interest in, agent-based coding workflows is a plus
